Sydney Hobart Regatta

2012 race: the boats leave Sydney Harbor

The international Sydney-Hobart regatta (officially the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race , also known as the Bluewater Classic in Australia ) is one of the most difficult ocean races in the world. It has been held annually since 1945 and traditionally started on December 26th ( Boxing Day ). The organizer is the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA). The fastest boats now cover the regatta route in one or two days.

route

Route

The regatta is sailed off Australia between Sydney ( New South Wales ) and Hobart ( Tasmania ) and has a length of 628 nautical miles (1,163 km). The route runs from Sydney via Eden along the Tasman Sea via Bass Strait and the Tasmanian coast through Storm Bay and the Derwent River to the finish line in front of Hobart.

regulate

At the regatta, the yachts are listed according to two ratings. On the one hand, a winner is chosen according to the sailed time ( line honors ), which is the most prestigious and most widely followed rating. The winner is the yacht that arrives first in the port of destination in Hobart. On the other hand, a winner is determined according to the calculated time. With this rating, the times sailed are multiplied or weighted with various characteristics of the yachts. The winner of this classification will receive the Tattersalls Cup , which is especially famous in Australia .

history

Many sailors have already lost their lives due to the dangerous nature of the weather. When in 1998 a strong hurricane raged with gusts of wind of up to 80 knots (approx. 150 km / h), six participants were killed; six yachts had to be abandoned, five of which sank; 55 people had to be rescued from distress at sea; of 115 ships, only 45 made it to their destination, and many have turned off.

Record development

Winner times (Line Honors Winner) from 1945–2017

The first winning yacht, Rani , took more than 6.5 days in 1945. In 1975 the American maxi yacht Kialoa was the first yacht to reach Hobart in under three days (2 days, 14 hours, 36 minutes and 56 seconds). This record lasted for the next 21 years before it was beaten by the German maxi yacht Morning Glory (length 80 feet ) in 1996 with a time of 2 days, 14 hours, 7 minutes and 10 seconds.

At the 55th edition of the regatta in 1999, Nokia was the first yacht that stayed under 2 days. The current record time is held by the Australian super maxi yacht Wild Oats XI with skipper Mark Richards and owner Robert Oatley. In 2005 she sailed in front of over 400,000 spectators after 1 day, 18 hours, 40 minutes and 10 seconds over the finish line in Hobart and in 2012 she improved her own record by almost 17 minutes to now 1 day, 18 hours, 23 minutes and 12 seconds.

The most recent editions

With victories from 2005 to 2008, the Wild Oats XI was the first to win the regatta in four consecutive years. In addition, the Wild Oats XI was able to beat the record of most Line Honors Winner victories in 2014 by the yacht Morna (later renamed Kurrewa IV ), which won the races 1946–1948, 1954, 1956, 1957 and 1960.

In 2009, the Alfa Romeo II under Neville Crichton won two hours ahead of the Wild Oats XI . A year later, the Wild Oats XI reached the finish line in front of Hobart in the 66th Sydney-Hobart Regatta as the first yacht (Line Honors Winner) after 2 days, 7 hours, 37 minutes and 20 seconds under the guidance of its skipper Mark Richards. In 2011 there was one of the most exciting decisions in the history of the regatta. Investec Loyal defeated the favorite Wild Oats XI and arrived in Hobart with a margin of only 3:08 minutes, which is minimal for the high seas. In 2016, Perpetual LOYAL undercut the previous record set by Wild Oats XI in 2012 by almost 5 hours on 1 day, 13 hours 31 minutes and 20 seconds.

In 2017 the boat Wild Oats XI reached the destination port of Hobart with a new record. Competitor LDV Comanche protested about a near collision at the start of the regatta. The lead boat suffered a penalty time of one hour for violating the right of way and the time she sailed, and she lost not only the best time but also the victory.

The 75th anniversary event in 2019 did not allow any new course records due to the relatively weak winds. The maxi-yacht Comanche , as First Ship Home, was able to celebrate a revenge against Black Jack , who had just been beaten in 2018, with a lead of 44 minutes . Third was the nine-time Line Honors record winner Wild Oats XI .
