First Ship Home

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With first ship home that racing yacht is called that crosses the finish line in a race as the first yacht (ger .: line honors winner). However, this yacht did not automatically win the race, as it usually has to grant the mostly smaller yachts a time allowance. In large long-distance regattas (example: Sydney-Hobart regatta ) it is considered prestigious to become First Ship Home . These regatta successes are also particularly registered and commented on in the media worldwide (see: Wild Oats XI , Skandia , Leopard 3 , Comanche ). Owners who are particularly image-conscious often have special maxi yachts built just to win the highly regarded First Ship Home prize in large regattas . Usually a special price with a corresponding trophy is awarded for the first yacht to cross the finish line. The First Ship Home Yacht is also the winner in one- class regattas .

The opposite of First Ship Home is Last Ship Home . Often the yacht that is the last to reach the destination also receives an honorary award. Often the special sympathy goes to those who have persevered to the end and did not give up. This role did the 1936-built yawl Peter von Danzig (now Peter von Seestermühe ) for their participation in the First World Regatta The Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973. The students Department of ASV Kiel were at every stage last ship home .
