The sailing yacht Wild Oats XI is a super maxi yacht of the Maxi 30 class , the record time holder and six-time Line Honors Winner of the famous Sydney-Hobart offshore regatta . The owner is the Australian multimillionaire Bob Oatley , who had the yacht built in 2005 and who has become wealthy as a winemaker and wine merchant.

Construction of the yacht

The US-American yacht construction company Reichel Pugh Yacht Design, Inc. from San Diego ( California ), which specializes in maxi yachts, supplied a design optimized for the length restriction of 30 meters according to the latest technical standard with a swiveling keel [canting ballast twin foil (CBTF) ] and flexible water ballast. The Wild Oats XI was built by the McConaghy Boats shipyard in Mona Vale, Australia, which also specializes in maxi yachts, from carbon and Kevlar- reinforced plastic in order to achieve great rigidity with a low hull weight.

Almost identical to Wild Oats XI are the super maxi yachts Alfa Romeo , Rambler and Morning Glory , which were also built at the McConaghy shipyard .

Sydney Hobart Regatta

At the first regatta at Sydney-Hobart in 2005, Wild Oats XI won, as expected, under skipper Mark Richards in a record time of one day, 18 hours, 40 minutes and 10 seconds and also won the Tattersall's Cup . The super maxi yacht was able to repeat this success in the following three years from 2006 to 2008 and was the second yacht to win three times in a row and the first yacht to win the regatta that has been held since 1945.

At the 65th edition of the regatta in 2009, Wild Oats XI had to admit defeat to the yacht Alfa Romeo and finished the race in second place after 628 nautical miles. But just one year later, the crew of the Wild Oats XI was named Line Honors Winner for the fifth time in this classic sailing event . However, the yacht was just able to avoid disqualification because it had violated the sailing instructions. Wild Oats XI reported incorrectly to the regatta administration at the waypoint Green Point . In 2011, Investec Loyal's yacht was pushed into second place with a minimal lead of 3:08 minutes.

In 2012, Wild Oats XI set a new record time at Syndey-Hobart (approx. 17 minutes faster than 2005) of one day, 18 hours, 23 minutes and 12 seconds, thus securing both the Line Honors Winner title and the title the Tattersall's Cup . This was the second time since 2005 that skipper Mark Richards and his crew of 18 won the Treble at Syndey-Hobart. The new sailing record was made possible by the modifications to the yacht in 2012, which affected the underwater configuration (an additional sword in front of the mast and a modified wing keel ) and a new Code Zero headsail from North Sails , which is rolled out at the bowsprit and like one The genoa is bulked. In 2014 Wild Oats XI set a new record: 8 wins based on time sailed (Line Honors). In 2015 the yacht was heavily modified. The last 2 meters of the ship were removed and the bow replaced by a new 2 meters longer and lighter. At the same time, the weight of the keel bomb was increased by 400 kg, a larger, more modern mast was installed and the bowsprit was lengthened, which made it possible to enlarge the sail area. However, Wild Oats XI could not finish the regatta this year because of a torn mainsail. The yacht Comanche was the first ship home . In the 2017 regatta, Wild Oats XI was the first yacht to cross the finish line in Hobart, but lost the Line Honors trophy and a new personal best due to a protest by competitor Comanche . In 2018, Wild Oats XI threatened to lose the title First Ship Home again after a very close finish due to a protest by the yacht Black Jack , which complained that the AIS system for ship identification at Wild Oats XI had not sent the entire time. The protest was dismissed because of a formal error. With the 2018 victory, Wild Oats XI achieved the prestigious Line Honors title nine times .

Other regatta participation

Wild Oats XI also successfully took part in the regattas of the Rolex Maxi Worlds off Porto Cervo , Sardinia and other regattas such as the Superyacht Cup and Millennium Cup off Palma . Owner Bob Oatley is planning a new annual regatta series for maxi yachts off Hamilton Island (Queensland) on the Great Barrier Reef (Australia).
