Comanche is a high seas regatta yacht built for entrepreneur James Clark in 2014 . The declared aim of the construction is to achieve records for monohull sailboats, which is why it was deliberately not subjected to any of the usual regulations.

construction

The Comanche was designed by the Paris ship design office Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP) and the ship designer Guillaume Verdier from Larmor-Baden and built by the traditional shipyard Hodgdon Yachts in the US state of Maine in 2014. It mainly consists of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . When designing, “no compromises should be made”; the 100-foot yacht does without any interior fittings. The winches are purely mechanical. This saves approx. 2 t of diesel fuel in a transatlantic regatta, as the machine does not have to run constantly. The freeboard corresponds roughly to that of an IMOCA Open 60 . The theoretically predicted speeds for space sheets are up to 35 knots (64.8 km / h), upwind up to 18 knots (33.3 km / h).

commitment

As with all of James Clark's more recent projects, the Comanche is also piloted by professional sailor Ken Read , together with the crews who also sailed the Puma in the Volvo Ocean Race and the Hanuman . The Comanche's first voyage was to Australia in December 2014 to take part in the important Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race .

At the end of 2017, the yacht was sold to Australian businessman Jim Cooney, Chairman of TCI Renewables, a renewable energy company. Cooney previously owned the Volvo Open 70 "Maserati" and the maxi-yacht "Brindabella".

Sailing records

During the Transatlantic Race 2015 from Newport (USA) to Portsmouth (GBR), the yacht set a new record for monohull sailing yachts over the distance covered in 24 hours from July 10th to 11th, 2015 . The yacht sailed 618.01 nautical miles (1144.555 kilometers). The old record was set by the Volvo Open 70 Ericsson 4 at the Volvo Ocean Race 2008/09 on the first stage on October 29, 2008 with 596.6 nautical miles.

From July 22nd to 28th, 2016 the Comanche set a new record for the fastest passage through the Atlantic from Ambrose near New York to Lizard Point for monohulls: 5 days, 14 hours, 21 minutes and 25 seconds. With an average speed of 21.44 knots (39.7 km / h) over the prestigious passage, she undercut the record set by the two-masted yacht Mari-Cha IV in 2003 by more than a day. After technical modifications to the sails and trim, she set the record for the fastest monohull at the Transpacific Yacht Race 2017 with 5 days, 1 hour, 55 minutes and 26 seconds, as well as a new 24-hour record with 618.01 nautical miles (1144,555 km) and an average speed of 25.75 knots (47.7 km / h).

Sydney Hobart Regatta

When the Comanche first took part in the Sydney-Hobart Regatta in 2014, the Comanche finished second behind the Wild Oats XI . In 2015, the Comanche finished as Line Honors Winner (First Ship Home) at the Sydney-Hobart Regatta . In 2018 the crew of the Comanche had to admit defeat to their rival Black Jack after a long fight at the finish . In 2019, the new owner and skipper couple Jim Cooney and Samantha Grant with their son James and a number of well-known sailing professionals on board succeeded in winning the prestigious Line Honors ( First Ship Home ).
