Volvo Open 70 (short: VO 70 or VO70 ) is a class of sailing yachts for offshore regattas . They are specially designed for participation in the Volvo Ocean Race . The VO70 class is based on the VO60 class and has been adapted to the sporting and technical developments several times since its existence. The respective version of the further development can be recognized by the designations v1 , v2 etc.
description
VO70 v1
A major change in the set of rules compared to the previous class VO60 concerns the introduction of the tilting keel . This increased the speed of the boats significantly. However, some of the boats still had to struggle with considerable problems with the technology and design during the edition of the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006. Several unscheduled repair stops had to be made in ports. The Spanish movistar even sank after severe water ingress due to damage to the keel suspension.
VO70 v2
A new set of rules was published in September 2006 based on the experience gained during the Volvo Ocean Race 2005–2006. For example, only steel and steel alloys were allowed for the keel fin and suspension . In addition, certain stress tests were prescribed.
VO70 v3
For the third version of the regulations, the permissible weight of the yachts was increased to 14,500 kg. Following the trend of the times, the installation of a regenerative energy source ( solar , wind or towing generator ) of 80 W to support the on- board electrics was also prescribed. The number of modifications during testing and the number of sails were also limited. This is to prevent escalating costs and enable smaller teams to participate.
