Eric Tabarly
Éric Tabarly (born July 24, 1931 in Nantes , † June 13, 1998 in the Irish Sea ) is one of the most outstanding ocean sailors and most innovative designers of regatta yachts of the 20th century. He made a name for himself primarily through victories in one-hand regattas and various record drives. In 1980, 75 years after Charlie's record voyage across the North Atlantic with the schooner Atlantic in 1905, he undercut Barr's record with the aluminum trimaran Paul Ricard (length: 16.50 m) in ten days, five hours and 14 minutes.
Tabarly's sailing yachts were called Pen Duick (Breton for coal tit ; literally pen = head; du = black; ick = diminutive , small) and are still in use today, especially on France's coasts. Tabarly also founded an organization under the name that now organizes deep sea regattas, among other things.
Services
Tabarly's first major success was victory with the Pen Duick II at the Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic Race (OSTAR) from Plymouth to Newport (Rhode Island) in the USA. For the following regattas he developed various yachts, some of which were very innovative. In addition to regatta rides, Tabarly was passionate about the classic yacht Pen Duick , built in 1898 to a design by William Fife III , which he had taken over and restored from his father.
In 1973, Tabarly and Gérard Petipas founded the Pen Duick SAS organization, which campaigned for various areas of sailing. Since 1985 Pen Duick has been organizing ocean regattas such as the Route du Rhum and the Transat AG2R ; the subsidiary organization "Match Racing" organizes the Transat BPE .
Éric Tabarly always refused to secure himself on board. This was to cost him his life in 1998 when he went overboard on a night voyage in the Irish Sea . His body was recovered by fishermen several days later. Tabarly was awarded the Legion of Honor Commander's Cross.
