The Dirt - They Wanted Sex, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll (Original title: The Dirt ) is an American film biography about the music group Mötley Crüe , which is based on the biography of the same name by Neil Strauss and the band members. The film was released on March 22, 2019 by Netflix .

action

The film describes the genesis of Mötley Crüe. The band members take turns taking on the role of the narrator, describing family backgrounds, getting to know the members, describing the first test recordings, finding a name, sexual escapades and first successes on the Sunset Strip . Other people, such as manager McGhee or Zutaut, the representative of the record company Elektra, break through the fourth wall , speak directly to the audience and describe their, not always easy, handling of Mötley Crüe.

The film describes the rise of the globally successful, stadium-filling Glam Metal band, but also shows its downsides, such as Nikki Sixx's addiction to herion, the drug-induced serious car accident of Vince Neil in which Razzle from the band Hanoi Rocks was killed and two other people were seriously injured, resulting in a prison term criticized for its short duration. The cancer death of Skylar, Vince Neil's daughter, Tommy Lee's violence towards women and Mick Mars' illness are also mentioned, as well as the falling out of the band, which led to the temporary singer John Corabi.

The film closes after the reunification of the original line-up in the mid-1990s, with the note that the band played together for another twenty years and the group disbanded in late 2015. The end credits show original recordings and photographs and compare them with realizations in the film.

production

Back in 2006, acquired Paramount Pictures and MTV Films the rights to the published 2001 band biography The Dirt . Larry Charles was supposed to take over the direction of a film adaptation at the time. Production was delayed and in 2013 Paramount and MTV abandoned their plans to make it happen. In 2015, the exploitation rights were acquired from Focus Features , which also left the project in the so-called " development hell" before the rights were acquired by Netflix in March 2017. In November 2017 Douglas Booth was announced as the first leading actor, who was followed in January 2018 by the actors of the other three band members: the musician Machine Gun Kelly , Daniel Webber , and Iwan Rheon , who was previously known for his portrayal of Ramsay Bolton in the series Game of Thrones became known. Filming of the film began in New Orleans in February 2018 .
