Mundaka ( Spanish Mundaca ) is a very old place in the Spanish Basque Country (province of Bizkaia ). The time of foundation is unknown. The uninhabited island of Izaro lies off the coast .

Billabong Pro Mundaka Surf Contest

Mundaka is especially famous among surfers who met here every year in October until 2009 for the Billabong Pro Mundaka to surf one of the best waves in Europe. The wave breaks left over a sandbar and is known for its tubes.

After the Murueta SA shipyard modified the mouth of the Oka River in 2003 by dredging to provide better access to their shipyard, the wave slowly disappeared until the Billabong Pro Mundaka had to be canceled in 2005. In 2006 the wave returned. The shipyard received strict requirements.
