Rodrigo Mundaca Cabrera (born May 13, 1961 ) is a Chilean agricultural engineer and activist for the right to free access to water as a public good and an essential human right. He is the spokesman for MODATIMA Movimiento de Defensa por el acceso al Agua, la Tierra y la protección del Medio Ambiente (in German: "Movement to defend access to water, the earth and environmental protection"). Because of his commitment in this area, he was awarded the Nuremberg International Human Rights Prize in 2018 (for handover in September 2019) .

Life path

In connection with his work in defense of free access to water, Rodrigo Mundaca has been prosecuted several times in Chile. Between 2012 and 2014, emphasized the Nuremberg jury, Mundaca had to answer 24 times before Chilean courts for his actions as spokesman for the organization he led. Mundaca is under constant police protection due to the intimidation, threats and persecution he endured following a campaign launched by Amnesty International in his defense. In June 2018, Amnesty International handed 50,000 signatures to the regional prosecutor for Valparaíso , Pablo Gómez Niada, calling for the authorities to provide effective protection for Mundaca and the members of MODATIMA, and called for immediate reporting of any criminal activity against these human rights defenders. The activities of Rodrigo Mundaca and MODATIMA in the last few years have mainly focused on those administrative offenses that hinder free access to water, such as the fountain illegally built in the river bed of the Petorca and Ligua rivers, as well as the irresponsible water consumption by large private companies that operate on the slopes of the region a massive avocado - monoculture operate, so that the small farmers in the area have no more water and even the drinking water supply in rural areas throughout the province of Petorca is questioned.

Mundaca is the author of numerous articles on environmental issues. In 2015 he published a book in which he summarized the problem of the right to water in connection with its privatization in Chile and stated that there was water robbery in Chile: in Chile the water was almost completely privatized.
