Life

In October 2010, the Ugandan newspaper Rolling Stone published photos of various people marked as homosexual and called for killing. Among them was human rights activist David Kato . This was then murdered in January 2011. Nabagesera was also named in the newspaper.

In 2011, homosexual acts were illegal in 37 African countries. There is often a hostile mood towards homosexuals in the population. This is cheered in particular by Christian preachers, who are funded by clerical associations from the United States, as well as by Muslim preachers. Homosexuality is also illegal in Uganda - Nabagesera's homeland - and can be punished with long imprisonment. In 2011, a tightening of the punishment for homosexuals in Uganda was discussed.

Nabagesera is publicly committed to the rights of homosexuals, e.g. B. in radio broadcasts. Because of her commitment and the threat associated with it, Nabagesera is forced to change her whereabouts frequently.
