Martin Ennals Award

The Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders (abbreviation MEA , German Martin Ennals Human Rights Award ) is an award for people and organizations that are particularly committed to protecting human rights in their countries. The award has been presented by representatives of ten of the most important human rights organizations since 1993. It is named after the British human rights activist Martin Ennals , who was Secretary General of Amnesty International from 1968 to 1980 . Until 2017, the prize was awarded annually in October in Geneva . Since 2019, the award ceremony has taken place in February. (Due to this change of date, the 2018 award ceremony was canceled.) The prize money is 20,000 Swiss francs .
