Freedom and Roam Uganda

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freedom and Roam Uganda (FARUG) is a Ugandan LGBT organization that is particularly committed to improving the situation of lesbian and bisexual women, transgender and intersex people (LBTI) in the country. The name Freedom and Roam means “freedom and freedom of movement ” in German and alludes to the goal of being able to move freely and with equal rights in society. FARUG is based in Kampala .

Organization development

FARUG was founded in 2003 by the lesbian Ugandan human rights activist Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera with a few other lesbian women. She headed FARUG from its inception until June 2013 and plays a leading role in the Ugandan LGBT civil rights movement . For her steadfast struggle, she was awarded the prestigious Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders in 2011 and was honored with the tenth Nuremberg International Human Rights Award in September 2013 .

According to a publication on the FARUG blog, Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera resigned from the management position of the organization on July 1, 2013, which has since been filled by Junic Wambya.

activities

The work of FARUG also included the fight against the draft law to tighten the legislation against homosexuality , which was first introduced in the Ugandan parliament in 2009 and failed in 2011 after further deliberations in parliament. FARUG campaigned on a national, international and regional level and entered into partnerships with feminist , women's and human rights as well as health and donor organizations.

According to a Guardian report from February 2012, which was also picked up by NBC , a FARUG-organized conference for LGBT rights with around 30 delegates in a hotel in Entebbe was stopped by the Ugandan government minister Simon Lokodo in person, accompanied by a police presence . The participating co-organizer, Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera, was threatened with arrest and was forced to flee the hotel. Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty then sharply criticized the behavior of the Ugandan government.

support

FARUG has been sponsored by the Germany- based Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation since 2012 . In 2011 FARUG started the “Hate No More Campaign ” against homophobic violence and legislation in Uganda , according to reports from the foundation . Together with the LSVD Berlin-Brandenburg , a lesbian activist was invited by FARUG in March 2012 to give a lecture on her work and the situation of lesbians in Uganda in Berlin . In 2012, there was an appeal for donations and a media campaign in favor of FARUG within the LGBT community in Germany. According to the magazine, the L-Mag T-shirt campaign raised 1,500 euros in donations, which were given to the Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation in February 2013.
