from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation is a foundation established in Berlin in June 2007 that advocates the human rights of lesbians , gays , bisexuals and transgender people .

The initiative for the world's first and only foundation that focuses on the human rights of LGBT people came from the Lesbian and Gay Association in Germany (LSVD), which was one of three associations worldwide that was officially granted advisory status at the United Nations in 2006 and when the foundation was established wants to build on this intensification of its human rights work. He also supports the project organizationally.

aims

The foundation's goals are to support international human rights work, support human rights defenders, and educate and reduce prejudice.

Naming and concept

The name of the foundation provides information about the concept and the program of the foundation. The naming of two people is remembered: the German doctor, sexologist, sex reformer and civil rights activist Magnus Hirschfeld (1868–1935) and the lesbian human rights activist Fannyann Eddy (1974–2004) from Sierra Leone , who was assassinated there in 2004 . This is to make it clear that the fight for the human rights of LGBT people began in Europe, but is now taking place on all continents.

The foundation's website states: “What Magnus Hirschfeld started in 1897 with the world's first civil rights organization for homosexuals, which he founded, is now carried on by many people on all continents - often at high personal risk. The Hirschfeld-Eddy-Foundation also wants to raise awareness of this endangerment of human rights defenders and counteract the threat posed by international public relations. The name of Fannyann Eddy stands for this brave and often life-threatening fight against oppression . "

The series of publications of the Hirschfeld-Eddy Foundation aims to sensitize actors to human rights for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people.

Care of the heritage

The foundation is also committed to the care of the heritage and the memory of the namesake of the foundation as well as to the collective compensation of homosexuals for the injustice committed by the National Socialists.

On the occasion of the renaming of the Magnus-Hirschfeld- Ufer opposite Bellevue Palace in Berlin, the foundation called for "restitution for the destruction of the entire lesbian and gay movement". Axel Hochrein, Chairman of the Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation, said: "The fight against homophobia and persecution must be continued." The LSVD Berlin-Brandenburg fought for the naming of the Hirschfeldufer for ten years . Hochrein recalled that, against the background of its history, Germany had a special responsibility to stand up for the rights of homosexuals and transgender people.
