Michael Kauch (born May 4, 1967 in Dortmund ) is a German politician ( FDP ). From 1995 to 1999 he was federal chairman of the Young Liberals , from 2003 to 2013 a member of the German Bundestag and has been chairman of the Liberal Gays and Lesbians since November 2013 .

Life

Michael Kauch, non-denominational, attended the Helmholtz Gymnasium in Dortmund from 1977 to 1986 and studied economics and social sciences at the University of Dortmund from 1986 to 1993 . He completed his studies with a degree in economics.

In 1994 he worked as a press and public relations officer for the FDP parliamentary group in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state parliament . From 1995 to 1999 Kauch was initially an economic policy advisor and from 1999 to 2003 managing director of the Federal Association of Young Entrepreneurs .

In July 2009, Kauch entered into a partnership with the 36-year-old hotel manager Henry Patke. Kauch is a volunteer member of the AIDS Aid Advisory Board in the Unna district . As an openly gay politician, Kauch is also involved in various projects for the equality of homosexual citizens: as a member of the board of trustees of the Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation , as an active member of the Queer Nations initiative and with his presence at many Christopher Street Days , also abroad. Kauch took part in the Warsaw Parada Równości ( Equality Parade ) on May 19, 2007 and in the preceding conference of the Equal Rights Foundation and the Queer Nations eV initiative.

On April 22, 2013, Kauch announced on Facebook that he had become the father of a daughter. According to his statement, the mother is also a homosexual woman living in a civil partnership.

After leaving the German Bundestag, Kauch has been working as an independent consultant since 2014.

politics

Kauch has been a member of the FDP since 1989. From 1990 to 1993 he was the deputy district chairman of the Young Liberals in Dortmund and a member of the student parliament for the Liberal Students Dortmund (LSD) . From 1993 to 1995 he was Deputy Federal Chairman for Programs and from 1995 to 1999 Federal Chairman of the Young Liberals.

Since 1998 he has been the district chairman of the FDP Dortmund. From 1995 to 2001 he was a member of the federal executive board of the Liberals and was a member of the program commission for the development of the FDP basic program "Wiesbaden principles". Kauch has headed the FDP's Federal Social Affairs Committee since 2001. From 2011 to 2013 he was again a member of the federal board of the FDP, since 2017 he has been a permanent guest there.

On June 14, 2003, Kauch replaced the deceased Jürgen Möllemann in the German Bundestag, to which he was a member until 2013. In 2005 and 2009 he moved into the Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia of the FDP. From 2003 to 2005 he was spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group for sustainable development and chairman of the FDP parliamentary group in the Enquête Commission on Ethics and Law in Modern Medicine . From 2005 he was spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group for environmental policy, and from 2005 to 2009 also spokesman for palliative and transplant medicine . On November 12, 2009 Michael Kauch was elected in the FDP parliamentary group as chairman of working group V with the policy fields of transport, construction, urban development, the environment, nature conservation and reactor safety. In addition, he was chairman of the FDP in the parliamentary advisory council for sustainable development and a member of the parliamentary advisory council for questions of ethics.

Due to the failure of his party to pass the five percent hurdle in the 2013 federal election , he was no longer represented in the 18th Bundestag.

At the 2019 European Party Congress , he was elected to eighth place on the list of the FDP for the 2019 European elections.

On November 17, 2013, Kauch was elected Federal Chairman of the Liberal Gays and Lesbians .

For the local elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2020 , he is the candidate of the FDP for the mayor of Dortmund .
