Juliet Victor Mukasa

Juliet Victor Mukasa (* 1975 ) is chairwoman of SMUG ( Sexual Minorities Uganda ), an umbrella organization for LGBT groups in Uganda , which claims to speak for all Ugandan lesbians, gays and transgender people, and is a member of the international advisory board of the Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation . She represents the continent of Africa on the ILGA World Board . She is a female-to-male transsexual.

Live and act

She successfully graduated from school and received an award for her banking apprenticeship. At 26, she came out as a lesbian. Because of her sexual identity, she repeatedly lost her job and home. In 2002 she decided to take up the fight for the rights of lesbians and gays. She made numerous appearances in newspaper statements and radio interviews.

In the Ugandan newspaper Monitor, Mukasa calls for an "end to the witch hunt" on lesbians and gays after a list of 45 allegedly homosexual people was published.

In 2005, the police searched her home without a warrant and arrested her friend for no reason. The case attracted worldwide attention from human rights organizations. She charged those responsible for these attacks.

A radio interview Victor Mukasa conducted with Simon Kasyate (Monitor FM) won the Radio Journalist Award at the CNN African Journalist of the Year Awards .

In 2006, she spoke to the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva and demanded protection from the states for the rights of transgender people in Africa: She described that she once had to undress in a church and that her clothes were burned because the pastor made a male ghost wanted to drive her out.

She founded African Solidarity, a virtual network of African LGBT activists. She is a founding member of the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Network. She is also a member of the Executive Board of the Coalition of African.
