Salil Shetty
Salil Shetty (born February 3, 1961 in Bangalore , India ) is an Indian human rights activist and one of the former general secretaries of Amnesty International .
biography
Shetty is the son of an Indian lawyer active in the women's rights movement and her husband, who campaigns for the rights of the Dalit , the "untouchables". Salil Shetty grew up in Mumbai and studied management and social policy in Ahmedabad and London.
Until 2009 he headed the United Nations Millennium Program for six years . Before that he was a board member of the global non-governmental organization ActionAid .
On December 21, 2009, Shetty was introduced as the next general secretary of the human rights organization Amnesty International . He took office in July 2010 as the successor to Irene Khan . In August 2018 he was replaced by Kumi Naidoo .
