Kumi Naidoo

Kumi Naidoo (* 1965 in Durban ) is a South African environmental and human rights activist . He was Secretary General of Amnesty International from August 2018 to December 2019 . From November 2009 to December 2015 he was Director of Greenpeace . He was the first African to head the organization.

Career

At a young age he fought against apartheid in South Africa as a member of the Indian community , which led to his arrest in 1986 and exile in 1989. Later he was active in the global fight against poverty and in various international organizations ( Civicus , Global Campaign for Climate Action (GCCA), Clinton Global Initiative , Amnesty International , World Economic Forum , UNIFEM ). In 2005 he was one of the founders of GCAP ( Global Call to Action Against Poverty , see Your Voice Against Poverty ). In 2017 he was on the board of three newly founded organizations in his native South Africa: Africans Rising for Justice, Peace and Dignity; Campaign for a Just Energy Future and Global Climate Finance Campaign. In August 2018 he became the International Secretary General of Amnesty International in London.

He holds a PhD in Political Science from Magdalen College , Oxford and a BA in Law and Political Science from the University of Durban-Westville .

In February 2015, as part of the spy cable leaks, it became known that the South African secret service had been observing Naidoo since 2010 at the latest.
