Ian Martin is a British human rights activist who has worked in various organizations.

Functions

From 1986 to 1992 Martin was Secretary General of Amnesty International . In 1993 and from 1994 to 1995 he took on the post of Deputy Executive Director of the international UN / OAS civil mission in Haiti . In 1995 and 1996 Martin was head of the UN human rights field operation in Rwanda . In 1998 it became the special adviser on human rights field operations in the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. From 1998 to 1999, Martin took over the post of Deputy High Representative for Human Rights in the Office of the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina .

From May to November 1999, Martin was the UN Secretary General's special envoy for the independence referendum in East Timor and head of the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET). During his term of office, the East Timor crisis fell, killing around 3,000 people. From 2000 to 2001, Martin took over the post of Deputy Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE). In 2002 Martin became Vice President of the International Center for Transitional Justice in New York and in 2005 Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal . In 2006 Ian Martin was again in East Timor as the UN Secretary General's special envoy for East Timor due to the unrest in East Timor . Back in Nepal, Martin became the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General to support the ongoing peace process (2006–2007) and until 2009 special envoy of the UN Secretary General and from February 2007 head of the United Nations Mission in Nepal . In 2009, Ian Martin became head of the UN Headquarters Board of Inquiry for incidents in the Gaza Strip . Since May 5, 2011, Ian Martin has been the UN Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General for Post-Conflict Planning in Libya and first head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) .
