Kamalesh Sharma ( Hindi : कमलेश शर्मा) (born September 30, 1941 ) is an Indian diplomat and former Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations .

biography

Sharma studied after school at St. Stephen's College in Delhi and at King's College in Cambridge and entered the diplomatic service in 1965 . From 1997 to 2002 he was Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) in New York City . Afterwards he was from May 21, 2002 to May 21, 2004 as special envoy of the UN Secretary General in East Timor . Most recently, he was the High Commissioner in the United Kingdom between 2004 and 2008 .

On April 1, 2008, he was elected Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations to succeed Donald McKinnon , making him the first Indian to hold a leading position in this union of sovereign states, which is primarily formed by the United Kingdom and its former colonies . In the election at the summit of the Commonwealth of Nations in Kampala in November 2007 , he prevailed against the then Maltese Foreign Minister Michael Frendo . On April 1, 2016, he was replaced by Patricia Scotland .

Since July 2009, he has also been Chancellor of the Queen's University of Belfast, succeeding former US Senator George J. Mitchell .
