Atul Khare (* 1959 ) is an Indian diplomat .

Diplomatic career

First, Khare served as an Indian diplomat in France , Mauritius , Senegal , Thailand and the United Kingdom, and with the Mission of India to the United Nations in New York .

Khare worked from June 2002 to May 2005 for the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor ( UNMISET ) as Chief of Staff and later as Annan's Deputy Special Representative .

He also worked as a Deputy High Commissioner in Mauritius , Counselor in India's UN Mission and Charge d'affaires in Senegal , where he was also accredited for Mali , Mauritania , Gambia , Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde . Khare also held the post of Head of Cabinet of the Foreign Ministry in New Delhi and Director (UN) in External Affairs Ministry .

On December 6, 2006, Khare was appointed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to succeed the Japanese Sukehiro Hasegawa as UN Special Envoy for East Timor and Head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste ( UNMIT ). Ameerah Haq from Bangladesh followed on December 4, 2009, followed by Khare as the new special envoy and UNMIT head. Khare was named Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations on April 30, 2010 .

Since June 1, 2011, Khare has been head of the United Nations Change Management Team (CMT) , which aims to increase the organization's efficiency.

Khare holds a bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and a master's degree in business and leadership from the University of Southern Queensland , Australia . He is with the writer Vandna Khare . married.
