Santurtzi [ san'tuɾtsi ] ( Basque ) or Santurce [ san'tuɾθe ] ( Spanish ) is a city in the greater Bilbao area in the Spanish Basque Country .
geography
Santurtzi is located on the Ría de Bilbao , 14 km from Bilbao, not far from the coast of the Bay of Biscay at 6 msnm . The city area is 6.8 km², the population density is 6773 inhabitants per km². The 446 m high, emblematic conical mountain Serantes is located directly on the town .
The climate is maritime with moderate summers and mild winters, the average temperature is 20 ° C in summer and 8 ° C in winter.
history
Santurtzi was first mentioned in a document in 1075 (foundation of the Church of San Jorge ). The town has been characterized by agriculture and fishing since the Middle Ages, later during industrialization by ore mining in the nearby Montes de Triano mountains . Since 1902 , the city has housed the outer port of Bilbao, which has been continuously expanded since then and has contributed to the economic importance of the place.
