Milky Chance is a German Folktronica - band from Kassel . For their albums Sadnecessary and Blossom they have been awarded gold records in several countries .
history
Milky Chance was founded in 2012. The two members Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch come from Kassel . Rehbein started playing guitar at the age of twelve. In high school he founded the band Flown Tones together with Dausch and other friends. Rehbein played bass there, and Dausch was the band's guitarist. Together they toured Europe as street musicians and played several concerts in Kassel and the surrounding area. Rehbein and Dausch laid in 2012, among others, the availability of a music performance course , her baccalaureate at the Jacob-Grimm-Schule from. Then the two musicians started a new band project together and recorded songs he had written in Rehbein's old children's room . One of these songs is Stolen Dance , which they uploaded to the YouTube video portal on July 14, 2012 .
After their first single, Stolen Dance, which they produced themselves as a duo, had been clicked several hundred thousand times on YouTube in 2012, they founded their own record company , which released their debut album Sadnecessary on May 31, 2013 . The single Stolen Dance reached number one in the single charts in Austria , Switzerland , Poland , Wallonia and France , and second in Germany and the Netherlands. Other top ten -rankings there were among others in Italy , Canada , Australia and New Zealand .
In 2014, the US market became aware of the duo. The online music magazine Spin recorded Sadnecessary out as "Album of the Week". After Rammstein , they were the second German band to appear on the late night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! . The band won prizes such as the European Border Breakers Award and an Echo in the category “Best National Act Abroad”. On April 18, 2020, they were the only band from Germany to take part in the multi-hour virtual benefit show One World - Together at home , which was intended to initiate donations for the WHO and its fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
2013: Stolen Dance
After playing only two live shows in 2013, Milky Chance recorded their debut album, Sadnecessary . Before the full album was released, several songs appeared on SoundCloud and YouTube. The single Stolen Dance was one of them. After the song got a large number of clicks on YouTube from April 4, 2013, the band quickly gained international attention. Spin wrote: “The clip for Stolen Dance nails the visual for its artist in a way that feels definitive and not overly self-conscious. It's still without being static, evocative while not provocative, silly but never stupid. ”The band made the video“ most blogged about act ”for a month on the music blog aggregator Hype Machine. As of January 2019, Stolen Dance had been viewed over 470 million times on YouTube.
On February 10, 2014, Stolen Dance was released as a maxi single in the DA-CH countries . To shorten the waiting time for the debut album Sadnecessary in the United States, an EP from Stolen Dance was released on May 9, 2014 , which led to the band's first chart success. Stolen Dance has been awarded platinum a total of 16 times and gold and silver each time . The single sold more than 3.6 million times.
2013: Sadnecessary, Down by the River and Flashed Junk Mind
The debut album Sadnecessary was released worldwide on May 31, 2013 as a download and as a CD in self-delivery. It includes the singles Stolen Dance , Down by the River and Flashed Junk Mind . The album reached number 14 in the German charts. On December 5th, 2013 they won their first award with the 1 Live Krone in the category "Best Single".
Down by the River was released as a second single on March 28, 2014. The song reached the charts in France, Germany, Switzerland and Great Britain and is part of the soundtrack of the computer game FIFA 15 . By November 2016, the album had been streamed around 510 million times on Spotify .
2014: Worldwide success
Sadnecessary was released in the United States in October 2014 and immediately hit number 17 on the Billboard 200 . Spin described the debut among other things: “serenely rollicking crossover jam” and emphasized that Stolen Dance “is no red herring - the great majority of Sadnecessary follows in its pattern of low-octane beats and gently lapping guitar strumming, making for a lovely and understated album. "
From March to May 2014 the band toured North America . They played their first show in the United States in the sold-out Bowery Ballroom in New York City .
After appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on October 22, 2014 followed a guest appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon .
The band won the European Border Breakers Award and was nominated for “Best German Act” at the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards .
2015–2016: Worldwide tours and successes
On three sold out tours through North America (United States & Canada), Milky Chance played in front of around 100,000 people. In August 2015, the band performed on The Late Late Show with James Corden . A sold out tour of Australia and New Zealand took the band to Melbourne , Sydney and Auckland . They also played on the Falls Festival Tour, the New Years Day Show 2015 and the Field Day Festival in Sydney. In 2015 Milky Chance also played a festival tour in South Africa . They co- headlined the Rockin 'The Daisies Festival in Cape Town with The Kooks .
2017: Blossom
On March 17, 2017, the band released their second studio album, Blossom . After the demos were mostly recorded while on tour or in Dausch's studio at home, the musicians, in contrast to the first album, went to a larger studio for album production, the Toolhouse in Rotenburg an der Fulda .
Rehbein and Dausch worked together with producer Tobias Kuhn for the recordings in the studio . While the basic mood of the songs on Blossom is similar to that on Sadnecessary , the recordings have been expanded with more analog percussions, instruments and sounds. The harmonica , which until then could only be heard live at concerts, was recorded in four songs by Antonio Greger.
On the piece Bad Things , the musicians collaborated with the British singer-songwriter Izzy Bizu .
At the start of the Blossom Europe Tour in London in February 2017, Sebastian Schmidt joined the band as a live drummer.
2019: Mind the Moon
On November 15, 2019, the band released their third studio album Mind the Moon .
