The Late Late Show with James Corden (short: Late Late ) is an American news satire, comedy talk and late night show on the US broadcaster CBS , hosted by James Corden . The English actor and comedian took over the moderation of the show in spring 2015 from his Scottish predecessor Craig Ferguson ( 2005-2014 ), previously the Americans Craig Kilborn (1999-2004) and initially Tom Snyder (1995-1999) had through the Shipment led.

In the United States, the show is on airtime at 12:37 a.m. in the relevant time zone and airs daily Monday through Friday. Recordings with a live studio audience are made Monday through Thursday in the early afternoon in Studio 56 at CBS Television City in Los Angeles , directly above the Bob Barker Studio (Studio 33). Producer of the show was David Letterman's company Worldwide Pants , which also produced Letterman's own talk show, which used to broadcast in the evening Late Show (in May 2015 replaced by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert ), now remain as a production company Fulwell 73 and CBS Television Studios .

The election of Cordens as the new host of the show and successor to Ferguson was announced on September 8, 2014. The premiere, originally planned for March 9, 2015, was later postponed by CBS to March 23 in order to use the 2015 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament to promote the new presenter.

Moderator

Moderator James Corden

James Corden (born 1978) could already refer to a diverse career in theater and television before starting the moderation and was well known in England since the beginning of the millennium, especially as plumber Smithy in his sit-com Gavin & Stacey and various benefit events of the BBC . Outside of Great Britain, however, he was only known to theater connoisseurs: in 2012 he won the Tony Award for best leading actor for his appearances in One Man, Two Guvnors on New York's Broadway , where he celebrated his breakthrough six years earlier with The History Boys . In film and television he stayed with supporting roles, he only received more attention in the USA in 2014 for his role as a baker in Into the Woods alongside Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt . CBS Entertainment chairwoman Nina Tassler justified the choice of Cordens as Ferguson's successor by saying that Corden was a warm, charming and original performer, whose wide range of creative instincts and representational talent made him an unparalleled source of entertainment. Tassler mentioned Cordens work in various media such as theater, film and television and described him as "loved and respected in all of them". Corden told the BBC in an interview after official confirmation from the US that he was "overwhelmed and honored [and] extremely excited [...] to host such a prestigious show". Corden moved to California with his wife Julia Carey and their children for the job, because, like the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson , the studio portions of the show will be produced on CBS Television City in Los Angeles. Two days before Ferguson's last appearance as host of the late night show, on December 16, 2014, Corden had a surprise appearance on his show, where they briefly talked about the upcoming takeover of moderation.

concept

Unlike its predecessors, Cordens Late Late Show maintains a house band with the nickname "Karen", led by musician and comedian Reggie Watts, who in addition to his musical activities as a lead singer, keyboard player, beatboxer and programmer also plays the role of the announcer (often in sung form) the show takes over. Watts is accompanied by Tim Young on lead guitar, Steve Scalfatti on keyboards, Hagar Ben-Ari on electric bass and Guillermo E. Brown on drums. The show's title sequence was originally intended to be directed by JJ Abrams . Instead, it was finally filmed by the Trollbäck + Company operation. Reggie Watts and the Late Late Show Band composed the theme song. The Daily Mail wrote, "Corden hopes to see the credits roll around Los Angeles on a BMX bike, arriving at the CBS studio and surrounded by other talented actors." Executive producers are Rob Crabbe and Ben Winston. Ultimately, the clip shows James Corden and Reggie Watts driving through LA on low rider LED bikes, as well as some abstract pixel stick light drawings. Trollbäck + Company continued the comment under the video: "James Corden and Reggie Watts sat in a fun ride through Los Angeles for the new CBS Late Late Show, the LA LA back to the Late Late . James actually wanted to be filmed by JJ Abrams with Reggie for a Mark Ronson title. We were of course honored to take JJ's place as he unfortunately has his hands full filming a blockbuster. We managed to shoot everything in one night - with LED bicycles, a lowrider and a pixel stick, which give this experimental new show an unusual visual tone. "

Although the opening monologue is a trademark of the late night show genre, Corden, who does not see himself as a stand-up comedian, sometimes chooses alternative methods of entry to the traditional jolly monologue . There is another point where the show differs significantly from others of its format in the United States: Following the example of the British The Graham Norton Show and other European talk shows, all of the evening's guests are invited to the stage at the same time. This gives them the opportunity to talk to each other - in contrast to the typical dialogue of the other and previous US late-night shows, in which the guests are interviewed one after the other for a few minutes by the presenter. Corden also attached great importance to creating an innovative, experimental and constantly reinventing show in which the guests should not just sit and talk, but take part in a wide variety of activities. Corden described this show concept as a kind of after-show party after the conventional evening program and the earlier late shows. Some particularly successful segments of the show are regularly revisited.

The show lives not only from the ratings of the actual show, but also and above all from its YouTube channel, on which individual clips are uploaded, for example the opening monologues, individual interview excerpts, #Carpool karaoke and other segments of the show. Within a year, the channel received over five million subscribers and over a billion views, the most successful video clip being a carpool karaoke segment with singer Adele : it was released on January 13, 2016 and was viewed almost 130 million times by September of the same year, YouTube calculates a cumulative playback time of more than 1,600 years for this 15-minute video alone. Overall, Carpool Karaoke developed into the most successful part of the late night show.

Episodes and Odds

Tom Hanks and Mila Kunis were Cordens first guests on March 23, 2015. Hanks traveled to rehearsal the day before to play a sketch-like review of his film career for the debut show together with Corden. Later on in the show, at Hanks's behest, Corden got Mila Kunis to announce her secret wedding to Ashton Kutcher , although it was later claimed she was joking. The episode drew 1.66 million viewers, the show's highest Monday audience in over three years.

A new episode was filmed and broadcast every weekday until May 25th, after which production was scaled down to four new episodes per week, while on Fridays a repetition of an episode recently aired is shown. Even in Corden's debut week, the audience rating was not as high as that of Late Night with Seth Meyers at 12:35 a.m., Meyers continues to lead weekly ratings for this airtime.

On May 20, 2015, The Late Late Show had the highest audience rating in the show's history with over four million viewers, although it started 20 minutes late and went way beyond it. That evening it was broadcast following the finale of the Late Show with David Letterman ; Letterman, who is widely regarded as a luminary in his field and whose late night show concepts helped to define the genre, ended his talk show after 30 successful years and retired at the age of 68. The Late Late Show episode was all about Thanksgiving to David Letterman . Corden then sang “ Every Breath You Take ” with Sting in front of the Ed Sullivan Theater (the studio of the Late Show ) and included, among other things, Letterman's Late Show Top Ten List in its opening monologue.

Carpool karaoke

Carpool Karaoke has been a recurring part of the show from the very beginning, which is also particularly popular internationally via platforms such as YouTube. In various English-speaking countries, the Carpool Lane (literally carpool lane) refers to a lane on busy roads that is reserved for carpooling during rush hour. This concept is intended to promote the formation of car pools and thus relieve inner-city traffic and the environment. The Carpool karaoke segment builds with a few exceptions to that Corden is once again desperately looking for passengers to be allowed to use the special track and not to be late for work. In his distress, he calls up befriended stars from the music and film scene, who willingly get on. This is followed by a car ride through Los Angeles, cut to a length of around 15 minutes, on which the inmates and Corden are enthusiastic and sing loudly to Cordens music collection. The selection of songs is almost exclusively based on the publications of the respective car occupants. Corden explained the success of the concept by saying that there was "something very exhilarating to watch someone very, very famous sing their hits in the very place where we all always sing them". In order to maintain authenticity, create an almost intimate atmosphere and thus reduce any inhibitions, the car occupants are filmed exclusively using small, permanently installed cameras on and in the car. A camera team follows in a second car for outside shots, but there are never cameramen in or around the main car. The popularity of the segment led to the production of two independent series: In July 2016 it was announced that Apple Music would release a series based on Cordens Carpool Karaoke. The TV station Spike had previously announced that it would broadcast a series inspired by the segment called Caraoke Showdown . The moderation should be done by Craig Robinson .

origin

The concept of having prominent singers sing their hits in the car - i.e. in the place where the rest of the world crashes them every day - was developed by Corden and Winston in England in spring 2011 when they came up with the idea for a contribution to Red Nose Day (annual Telethon organized and for the benefit of Comic Relief ). In the clip, Cordens alter ego, the plumber Smithy, is picking up his old friend George Michael from the airport and wants to spend a relaxing day with him when the organizational talent is called for help by the patrons of Red Nose Day. Smithy agrees and tries on the way to headquarters, to comfort the indignant Michael by songs his band Wham! plays in the car; the plan works, both sing along loudly.

In early 2014, Corden picked up the idea again when he was making a BBC documentary about Gary Barlow . As an avowed fan, he went on a road trip across England, with Corden and Barlow sitting alternately at the wheel and Corden encouraging his idol to sing along with old and new take-that hits while driving.

When Corden received the approval of the late-late successor six months later, he worked out the concept again with his old friend Ben Winston, who had already come up with the comic relief sketch in 2011. They included the idea in the new show concept, but initially couldn't convince anyone of the unusual idea until Mariah Carey agreed. She was a guest of the first Carpool Karaoke segment, which was so popular that it quickly became an integral part of the show. Since then, a large number of celebrities have climbed into Cordens SUV, including the US First Lady Michelle Obama .

Notable episodes

Carpool Karaoke has been one of the most popular segments since the show started. Over time, Corden was able to persuade a large number of very different celebrities to take a drive, from Stevie Wonder , who wanted to take the wheel for a short time and later serenaded Corden's incredulous wife Julia on the phone, to Justin Bieber , Chris Martin ( Coldplay ), Lin-Manuel Miranda , One Direction , Sia , Jennifer Hudson and Paul McCartney to First Lady Michelle Obama, with whom he curled around the White House , singing and rapping . He and Iggy Azalea bought wedding dresses on the way, Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas let themselves be carried away to a spontaneous street concert for three. Actors like George Clooney and Julia Roberts also kept Corden company on his “daily commute to work”. Like many other segments of the show, the Carpool deposits will be posted on the show's YouTube channel after it has aired. So far, the clips have almost exclusively achieved record-breaking viewers and went viral . The short trip through London with singer Adele on January 13, 2016, which has already been viewed over 212 million times (February 2020), remains the most popular . On the day of its release, the video had already been viewed 19 million times, within the first week it reached well over 40 million views , making it one of the most viral videos in the history of any US late-night show. On March 29, 2016, CBS aired a prime-time special episode of the Late Late Show that focused on the Carpool karaoke segment and featured a new episode starring Jennifer Lopez . The special episode received the special award as Outstanding Variety Special at the Primetime Emmy Awards 2016 , the show as a whole was nominated for another Emmy award.

Other recurring segments

  • Talking Mentalist : During the summer break of 2015 and until the premiere of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert , CBS repeated old episodes of various drama series in the evening program before the Late Late Show . During those weeks several episodes of the show began with the Talking Mentalist segment - a parody of various "after-show" supporting programs such as Talking Dead and Talking Bad . In Talking Mentalist , Corden and his guests discussed the rerun of The Mentalist that has just aired . When CBS followed suit, the sketch was repeated as Talking Hawaii Five-0 . The presenter of Talking Dead , Chris Hardwick , was present as a guest .
  • Celebrity Noses : The recurring sketch Celebrity Noses pretends to be a game that focuses on the noses of various celebrities. The actual segment, however, consists of the fact that Corden never gets to start the actual game due to countless unforeseen and often curious interruptions, and at some point, apparently completely frustrated, moves on to the next segment.
  • Take a Break : In this segment, Corden visits various companies in the service sector and sends an employee on a short vacation. He then tries his hand at the job of the relevant employee for a few hours and usually spends the time scaring off customers. In this way worked Corden among others even at LensCrafters (optician) and Planet Hollywood , modeled for the game show The Price Is Right and resigned as mayor of Los Angeles in appearance.
  • Crosswalk the Musical : James and his guests offer unsuspecting motorists a flash mob-like performance of various musical songs in the middle of a zebra crossing.
  • First Line, Every Line : Corden and one of his guests (including Josh Groban ) take turns singing well-known songs. The difficulty lies in the fact that only the text of the first line can be repeated to get the full melody of the original.
  • Corden Acts Out Celeb Filmography : James Corden reenacts scenes from his most important films with his guest (e.g. Tom Hanks , Matt Damon , Arnold Schwarzenegger ) within a few minutes , sometimes with the support of other guests.
  • Side Effects May Include : Possible side effects of various crazy ideas, certain behaviors or the use of different objects are listed in the style of an instruction leaflet. Among them were as diverse as wearing a hat, buying a sword, leftover food between your teeth, your first credit card, eating a biscuit, registering for Tinder or pool parties.
  • Mystery Pizza Box : Corden delivers pizza and offers customers an alternative Mistery Pizza Box , which can contain a positive or negative surprise. In many cases, the Mystery Box contains the ordered pizza with an addition in the form of money, celebrity visits or private performances by choirs, dance groups, etc.
  • None of the Above : Other members of the audience see a short video clip, which mostly shows an excerpt from a news program or sports announcement. The respective moderator makes an embarrassing slip of the tongue, but the video is interrupted beforehand. The player from the audience now has to complete the speaker's sentence and is given four possible answers. The last one is at every round "D: None of the above" ( none of these ). This is invariably the correct answer. Nevertheless, different sentences are chosen again and again by the playing spectators. In this case, Corden will again clearly point out the name of the game. If you choose D , however , Corden asks why. In both cases, the decision is mostly jokingly attributed to the pure gut feeling, to which Corden reacts with teasing comments about the extraordinary cleverness or stupidity of the candidate. The question is then resolved and the rest of the video is shown.
