history

Broadcasting center in Auckland

The company was founded in 1980. The history of television in New Zealand goes back to 1960. From 1960 to 1962, regional television stations were founded in the largest cities in the country: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, and since 1962 they have operated under the umbrella of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (NZBC). This also operated radio at the time. A national television program was first produced with TV One in 1969, when the regional stations were combined into a network.

The dissolution of the NZBC took place in 1975 and the television channel TV One continued as an independent organization. In addition, TV 2 , called South Pacific Television from 1976 , was a second public television company. Radio New Zealand also became independent .

The two television channels were merged with Television New Zealand in 1980. Until 1988, under the umbrella of the Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand (BCNZ), Radio New Zealand also belonged, which were then continued as separate organizations.

From 2007 onwards, besides TV1 and TV2, further programs were digitally distributed. TVNZ 6, distributed digitally from 2007 to 2011, was an advertising-free full program, u. a. with programs for children ("Kidzone") and families. TVNZ 7, on the air from 2008 to 2012, was an advertising-free news and information channel. The youth program TVNZ U was on the air from 2011 to 2013. Content produced in New Zealand was distributed on TVNZ Heartland. The channel was broadcast exclusively via Sky Television Network from 2010 to 2015. TVNZ Kidzone 24 was a program for children (2011-2016) and was also broadcast on the Sky Television Network. The channels TVNZ 1 + 1 and TVNZ 2 + 1 have partly emerged from the set channels.
