history

The first radio broadcasts were made in New Zealand during the First World War , when a station went into operation in Rarotonga, which also broadcast the news of the 1918 armistice. The first regular radio stations could be listened to for a few hours a week in the larger cities since 1922.

Public broadcasting in New Zealand has its roots in 1925, when the government enacted a law that granted Radio Broadcasting Company (RBC), founded two years earlier, fees from radio sellers in the country for a period of five years for every device sold. This was made on the condition that a non-commercial broadcasting system with at least four stations would be expanded. This was the direct predecessor of today's National Radio . However, the proceeds from these taxes were so inadequate that in 1931 a radio directorate was set up under the government, which, however, was still dependent on license fees. In 1936, the country's first Labor government established the National Broadcasting Service as a government agency. After World War II the system was reorganized into the New Zealand Broadcasting Service (NZBS) and in 1962 the status as a government agency ended with the establishment of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (NZBC)

Initially, broadcasts took place in the four major cities of the country: Auckland , Wellington , Christchurch and Dunedin , but the programs also led to a closer rapprochement between town and country because now all citizens could hear the same programs. Mainly music was broadcast at that time. Since 1927 there was also news and an evening weather report, which was aimed primarily at farmers. School radio began in 1931 with regular broadcasts.

With the Radio New Zealand Act 1995 , also known as the Broadcasting Act , Radio New Zealand was set up as a state-owned sole proprietorship from 1995, responsible for the various radio programs National , Concert and Radio New Zealand Pacific (until April 2017: Radio New Zealand International ) is.
