Joshua Winslow "Josh" Groban (born February 27, 1981 in Los Angeles ) is an American actor and singer with a classically trained baritone voice. By 2012 he had sold over 25 million records worldwide.

biography

Initially Groban sang in the school choir, but after his talent was recognized, he was accepted at the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts , where he participated in various school performances. After graduating from high school, he studied at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.

Josh Groban was dating Mad Men actress January Jones from 2002 to 2006 . From October 2014 to August 2016 he was with the actress Kat Dennings .

Career

1998, music producer David Foster looking for a singer for the inauguration ceremony of the Governor of California; Groban sent him a demo tape and was hired. A year later Andrea Bocelli dropped out for his rehearsals at the Grammy Awards, Groban stepped in and sang a duet with Celine Dion . In 2000, Groban got a guest role on the television series Ally McBeal . In 2002 he sang the song The Prayer with Charlotte Church at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , and he also appeared on Broadway and in 2004 in the opening act for the Super Bowl final. In May 2008 he was seen in Chess in Concert , a concert version of the musical Chess , at the Royal Albert Hall in London as Anatoly Sergievsky alongside Idina Menzel . That same year he performed with many other artists at the celebration of Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday in Hyde Park , London. Groban's musical spectrum ranges from classical to pop, he sings in English , Italian , Spanish and French . His debut album Josh Groban sold over four million copies in the US and went platinum 4 times. His second studio album Closer has sold over five million times in the US so far. His live album Live at the Greek sold over 500,000 copies in the United States. His studio album Awake , released in 2006, sold almost two million copies in the US and is one of the most successful albums released in 2006. In 2007 he released his Christmas album Noël . After three weeks in the USA, the album already sold over a million times, making it one of the few Christmas albums to have exceeded this mark. With around twelve million albums sold in the US, he was one of the most successful male solo artists of the decade.

Groban also worked on the soundtracks of the films AI ( For Always , duet with Lara Fabian ), Troja ( Remember , duet with Tanja Tzarovska ), Der Polarexpress ( Believe ) and Beauty and the Beast from 2017 ( Evermore ). In November 2010 his album Illuminations was released . Since October 2016, Groban has played the title role of Pierre Bezhukov in the Broadway musical Nathasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, which is based on an excerpt from War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy . For this role he was nominated for a Tony Award in the category "Best Actor" in 2017 . Since September 2018, Groban can be seen on Netflix in the crime series The Good Cop alongside Tony Danza .

social commitment

Not least because of the influence of his mentor David Foster, Groban sang again and again at benefit events such as the Concert of Hope for Tsunami Victims or Live 8 . After a trip to Nelson Mandela in South Africa , which made a lasting impression on him, he founded the Josh Groban Foundation in 2004 (since 2011: Find Your Light Foundation), which supports children in need.
