AI - Artificial Intelligence is a science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg based on the short story Supertoys Last All Summer Long by Brian Aldiss . Originally this was a film project by Stanley Kubrick , which he had given to Steven Spielberg before his death. The film is also a modern adaptation of the Pinocchio theme. The film opened in German cinemas on September 13, 2001.

In the middle of the 22nd century the polar ice caps melted due to extensive industrialization and environmental pollution . In order to limit the consumption of resources, the number of children was restricted and licenses for births were introduced. There are now robots that have a consciousness - so-called "mechas". A prototype of a new series from Cybertronics is David. He is in the form of an 11-year-old boy and is able to form emotional bonds and love people. The company management decides to hand over the prototype to their employee Henry Swinton, whose own son is in a coma with little chance of survival . By accepting David, Henry hopes that his wife Monica can get over the loss of their own son Martin.

After some sort of probationary period, Monica decides to keep David. Therefore, with the so-called imprinting (a code that can be spoken once) , she activates David's unconditional love for her with total devotion. Once activated, embossing cannot be reversed, and this mecha can no longer be passed on to others. Should the family no longer want him, he would have to be taken back to Cybertronics, where he will be destroyed.

The situation becomes complicated when Martin, the family's biological son, wakes up from his coma and heals. A jealous rivalry develops between David and Martin, in which Martin consciously exploits his position of power. The family is emotionally overwhelmed. When David panics and threatens Martin's life, Monica decides that David must leave the family. Monica, however, is unable to bring David back to the manufacturer, where he would be destroyed. Instead, she decides to leave David in the forest to at least prevent his destruction.

David falls into the clutches of people who destroy disused or abandoned mechas for the amusement of others at so-called meat festivals (in the original Flesh Fair ), but can escape because he looks so human. David looks for the guilt for the withdrawal of love in himself and attributes his misfortune to the fact that, unlike his stepbrother, he is not a real person. Because of the bedtime stories of his "mother", he is familiar with the story of Pinocchio, in which a mystical "blue fairy" turns the wooden puppet into a real boy. He identifies with Pinocchio and makes the decision to look for the blue fairy in order to be transformed into a “real boy”. The impetus for his persistent search is the conviction that in this way he will win back the love of his "family", especially his mother. A loyal companion on his odyssey is a "supertoy" named Teddy (a highly developed teddy bear that can walk, think and talk). On part of his journey he is accompanied by the robot Joe, a mecha that provides sexual services and has been on the run since the death of a customer.

On his search, David finally finds a head-high decorative figure in a former amusement park on Coney Island (which has sunk due to the melting of the pole) , which he believes should be the blue fairy. He keeps asking her to turn him into a real boy. He is trapped in his underwater vehicle by falling metal parts. 2000 years go by in which an ice age takes place and humanity dies out. The mechas have meanwhile evolved into their own, highly developed, humanoid form. David is discovered during archaeological excavations in the ice. The new inhabitants of the earth are very interested in David's experiences because he is the only active mecha that has known humans directly. The freed and awakened David walks over to the thawing blue fairy and touches it, which then breaks into many pieces.

Shortly afterwards, David finds himself in his old home, where he finds a holographic version of the blue fairy. Again David expresses his desire to be transformed into a human. The fairy, remotely controlled by the new mechas, cannot fulfill this wish and instead offers to bring some people back to life with the help of DNA remains. But David is only interested in Monica. At that moment, Teddy pulls out a lock that David once cut from Monica's hair. She had sewn the furry supertoy onto her back then.
