BBC Culture's 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century
The BBC Culture's 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century and The 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century list was published in August 2016 by the BBC's culture department . It is the result of a survey of 177 film critics, academics and curators from all over the world, who were each asked for an opinion on what they considered to be the ten most important films that were published between 2000 and 2016.
Background and method
The editors published the survey results for the 100 most important American films in July 2015 and, according to their own statements, were surprised that only six productions released after 2000 were included in the list. These were:
space | Original title | German title | Director | appearance year |
---|---|---|---|---|
21st | Mulholland Drive | Mulholland Drive - Street of Darkness | David Lynch | 2001 |
79. | The Tree of Life | The Tree of Life | Terrence Malick | 2011 |
87. | Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind | Forget Me Not! | Michel Gondry | 2004 |
94. | 25th hour | 25 hours | Spike Lee | 2002 |
96. | The Dark Knight | The Dark Knight | Christopher Nolan | 2008 |
99 | 12 years a slave | 12 years a slave | Steve McQueen | 2013 |
In July 2016, the editorial team began to question film critics from print and online media, academics and film curators about what they believed were ten most important films from the years 2000 to 2016. While 62 critical voices from all over the world were included in the vote for the “100 most important American films”, 177 people from 36 countries took part in the new survey, including 81 from the United States, 19 from Great Britain and five each from Canada , Cuba, France and Germany as well as four each from Australia, India, Israel, Italy and Colombia, two from Austria and one from Switzerland. 122 respondents were men and 55 women. The participants from German-speaking countries were Andreas Borcholte ( Spiegel Online ) , Carmen Gray ( Critics' Week ) , Alexander Horwath (Director of the Austrian Film Museum ), Dominik Kamalzadeh ( Der Standard ) , Andreas Kilb and Verena Lueken (both Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ), Susanne Ostwald ( Neue Zürcher Zeitung ) and Hannah Pilarczyk ( Der Spiegel ) .
The respondents had to create a ranking list. The BBC editors rated each film that was ranked number 1 by the voters with ten points, and then awarded the points in descending order to one point for number 10. The film with the most points won the election.
List of the most frequent mentions
The winning film Mulholland Drive was named by 47 voters (27 percent of all voters), while 16 respondents (four women, twelve men) gave the work first place. The directors most cited on the list are Paul Thomas Anderson , Wes Anderson , Ethan and Joel Coen , Michael Haneke , Christopher Nolan and Apichatpong Weerasethakul (three films each). After language, English dominates (57 films), followed by French (13) and Spanish (4). According to the nationality of the directors, films by Americans dominate (35 films), followed by their colleagues from Great Britain and France (9 each). In addition to Hanekes Caché , The White Ribbon - A German Children's Story and Love , films by Maren Ade ( Toni Erdmann ) and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck ( The Lives of Others ) were also placed. 45 of the placed films were shown at the Cannes Film Festival .
As there was a tie between Carlos - The Jackal , Requiem for a Dream and Toni Erdmann , all three films were listed by the editors at number 100, which means that the top 100 includes two more entries. Toni Erdmann is the only film from the film year 2016 that was considered. 2012 and 2013 are the most frequently appearing film years with nine titles each.
