The collector (original title: Les glaneurs et la glaneuse ) is a French documentary (2000) by Agnès Varda .

The film, shot in many different locations in France, shows the practice of gleanings or stubble mainly from the point of view of the rural population of France. The right of gleaning (French: “glaner” for “to pick up”, “to collect”) originally refers to what remains in the field after the harvest. In many scenes a lawyer dressed in robes can be seen explaining the legal situation on site. The documentary is interested in collectors / stoppers who search the freshly harvested fields for edible crop residues, but also in other types of collectors. These glaneurs , as Agnès Varda calls them in relation to the glaneuses in the painting by Jean-François Millet (1814–1875), are close to the Freeganism movement . The filmmaker shows very different people: young and old, farmers, welfare recipients , employees, pensioners, in the city or in the country, who pick up what was left in the fields after the harvest or pick leftover fruit from the trees; Vegetables , fruits or crops , some of them misshapen or too large for commercial use, left behind by businesses, discarded edible food collected from the abandoned bins of supermarkets , bakeries or after the end of markets . The film also shows people collecting objects from trash cans or the bulky waste on the streets. These objects are repaired and reused by people in everyday life, or used by artists as material for their works of art. Starring in the film: Agnès Varda, Bodan Litnanski, François Wertheimer u. a. A sequel is her film Les glaneurs et la glaneuse… deux ans après ( The collectors… two years later ), which appeared two years later (2002).
