A stubble is a harvested corn - field , nor the bottom of the stem parts of plants rooted stop. When the field is re-used, the soil can then either be tilled (e.g. plowing ), in some countries where this is permitted, the straw stubble can also be burned for phytosanitary reasons or direct sowing. The remains of the vegetation serve as fertilizer for subsequent cultivation.

Until well into the 20th century, children in the country (Germany) - because they often only owned a pair of “Sunday shoes” and otherwise only walked with clogs or barefoot - used a special running technique on stubble fields in which you only ever walk your feet raised to such an extent that they could not get over the stubble, which would cause them to fold over while walking and not prick the sole of the foot with their ends.

In Markgröningen there is still the traditional shepherd run , in which only real shepherds and shepherd's daughters run barefoot across a 300-pace-long stubble field. The aim is to show that you are faster than a fleeing sheep .

Others

Since the previous harvest on a stubble field - in contrast to other conditions in a field - does not cause any significant damage to the field, these are often used by riders for cross-country riding.

Stubble fields can be important places for migrating birds to forage in autumn .
