history

Market history

The market was first mentioned in a document in 1298, but not yet under the name "Stoppelmarkt". Until 1577 the market took place in the streets within the fortress walls of Vechta. Merchants from many European countries met on this market. In 1577 it had to be moved to the harvested fields in front of the city gates because of the plague . Since it took place in stubble fields , it was named after it.

Traditional couple Jan and Libett

Jan von Dählen un Stuken Libet: traditional couple from the stubble market

On August 22, 1909, the first Vechtaer Stoppelmarkt newspaper appeared. In 1912 the newspaper first presented "Jan von Dählen un Stuken Libet" (a drawing by economist Heinrich Averdam). In 1919, for the 10th edition of the sheet, the two figures appeared again in the sheet. This time as "Jan and Libett up Stoppelmarkt" on the title page. Since that time, "Jan and Libett" have been inseparably linked to the Vechta Stoppelmarkt as a traditional couple. The then councilor Josef Möller had the idea of bringing "Jan von Dählen un Stuken Libet" to life as a visitor from the countryside to the stubble market. This resulted in an advertising campaign using a barrel organ , which was first carried out in 1971 and has proven to be extremely effective to this day. Today, the "barrel organ tours" are an integral part of advertising in the run-up to the market. Regular destinations include the Oldenburg government agency, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Nordwest-Zeitung (all in Oldenburg) as well as the Oldenburgische Volkszeitung in Vechta, the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung and the Fürstenau community .

Jan and Libett also shape the face of a hot air balloon (D-OVEC) (matching the Vechtas VEC label). Jan and Libett also act as advertising characters for the traditional stubble market drink, the “stubble hop”. This mild wheat grain contains 32 percent alcohol. Since 2012, the traditional couple has coined the title of the children's book "Jan and Libett on the Stoppelmarkt", which appears in High and Low German.

course

The market starts on a Thursday and ends on a Tuesday every year.

On the Tuesday before the Thursday of the market opening, a football game has been taking place for over 30 years between the company sports association of the city or the district of Vechta and a selection of the showmen. The game always serves a charitable goal. There is also a star guest every time; In 2007 he was the honorary captain of the German national soccer team Uwe Seeler .

You can already celebrate on Wednesday evening from around 8 p.m. at the nearby court pubs Oldehus, Schmedes and some of the surrounding stands. This evening is also called "Christmas Eve" by the locals.

Every year from 4.30 p.m. on Stoppelmarkt Thursday, a parade moves from the town hall to the Stoppelmarkt area. This parade reaches its destination at around 6:30 p.m. and the stubble market is opened at the Amtmannsbult by the mayor of Vechta.

The market opens at 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. A special feature on Friday is the so-called rush hour, which takes place from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the market area. In many rides there is a second ticket free of charge according to the motto "Pay once, drive twice". Another firm tradition is the youth service of the Catholic rural youth movement in Germany , which takes place every year on Saturday at 5.30 p.m.

On Sunday, the Stoppelmarkt starts at around 10 a.m. with a service in the largest festival tent, the Niedersachsenhalle.

The market on Monday starts around 7 a.m. with a cattle and horse market. Many shops and businesses in Vechta as well as all general education schools remain closed on Stoppelmarkt Monday. That is why the proportion of locals is traditionally significantly higher on stubble market Monday than on other market days.

After the market opens around 1 p.m., Tuesday begins as a so-called family day . Many rides offer reduced prices until 6 p.m. Since Tuesday is also the last day of the stubble market, a big fireworks display will be kindled at 10 p.m. The market ends around 1 a.m.

Undeveloped buffer between the Stoppelmarkt and the settlement core of Vechtas (2016)

There is no official curfew on any day . In some tents the tap is tapped until 7 a.m., around 3 a.m. the hosts have to mute the music as a precaution so that there are no complaints. However, the market area is separated from the settlement core of Vechta by an undeveloped buffer several hundred meters wide, and no complaints are to be expected from the surrounding farmers because of the rental of parking spaces for their fields. A reduction in the sound level of the loudspeakers on the festival area is necessary because of the showmen , who spend the night on and on the market area.

Stubble markets in other cities

The city of Barmstedt in Schleswig-Holstein also celebrates a stubble market every year in August. There, too, the market is a traditional, multi-day city festival with showmen and restaurants. Although both markets have the same name and are held at the same time of year, they have arisen independently of each other. The name "Stoppelmarkt" comes from the harvested grain fields, which in northern Germany are called stubble fields. Since the harvest in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein takes place at the same time of year, the market is also held at the same time of year.

Other events called “Stoppelmarkt” take place on the first weekend in September in Darfeld ( Coesfeld district in North Rhine-Westphalia ) and on German Unity Day (October 3) in the city of Neuenbürg in the Enz district of Baden-Württemberg .
