Rednex is a music project from Sweden founded in 1994 .

Band portrait

Rednex was created as a retort band from producers Janne Ericsson, Örjan Öberg and Pat Reiniz (real name Patrick Edenberg.)

The group consists of the musicians Annika Ljungberg ("Mary Joe", front woman), "Ace", "Snake" and "Maverick". From 1994 to 2001 it consisted of the musicians Billy Ray, Bobby Sue, BB Stiff and the front woman Mia Löfgren ("Whippy"), from 2001 to 2004 Julie-Anne Tulley ("Scarlet", front woman), Dagger (lead singer), Joe Cagg and Jaylee the group. At the beginning of 2004 Joe Cagg and Jaylee were replaced by "Ace" and "Crock", at the end of the same year "Scarlet" also decided to leave.

The name Rednex is derived from the American expression redneck (literally translated: red neck), a derogatory term used in the USA for a southerner with regard to all associated clichés and stereotypes (political / religious conservatism / reactionism , rural / peasant way of life and Country music), which the band embodies (and caricatures / parodies ) through their music style, their outfit and their video clips .

The Stockholm project of various musicians, stylists and producers landed their first international No. 1 hit in 1994 with the cover version of the North American country song Cotton Eye Joe , which stayed in the German single charts for 25 weeks. Ten weeks of that, the title was in first place, something that no Swedish production had achieved before. In Germany alone they sold over 1.7 million singles. The follow-up hits were Old Pop in an Oak and Wish You Were Here . After a break of almost six years, Rednex were successful again. With the title Spirit of the Hawk , written by Axel Bendung , they occupied number one in the German single charts for nine weeks. The singer Mary Joe had meanwhile been replaced by Whippy and Scarlet.

Typical of Rednex fast pieces are as Cotton Eye Joe , Wild'n Free or Spirit of the Hawk , the Euro dance music with Country -elements and Western film - samples mix. However, they also achieved chart success with the two ballads Wish You Were Here and Hold Me for a While .

In March 2006, the band took part - with new and partly well-known members (Mary Joe replaced Scarlet again) - with the song Mama Take Me Home in the Swedish qualification for the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest . In the following year they took part in Romania's national preliminary decision together with the band Ro-Mania . Her title Well-o-wee was disqualified because of a violation of the rules of the game. In 2008 they competed again with Ro-Mania with the title RailRoad, RailRoad in the Romanian preliminary round, but were eliminated in the semifinals. With their title Football is Our Religion they contributed a song to the 2008 European Football Championship in Switzerland and Austria.

Cast of Rednex 2007–2008: Anders Lundström, Annika Ljungberg and Jens Sylsjö.

On September 26th, 2008 the founders and owners of Rednex announced through a press release on www.rednexmusic.com that the entire staff of the band will be changed from January 1st, 2009. The new band will consist of previous members Scarlet, Dagger, Joe Cagg and Ace Ratclaw. This is the second time that all members have been replaced. This first happened in January 2001 when Whippy, Billy Ray, Bobby Sue and BB Stiff left the band and were replaced by Scarlet, Dagger, Joe Cagg and Jay Lee.

In September 2015 Rednex performed at the Eisleber Wiesenmarkt , where they also sang Wish You Were Here ; as well as on the party series "90s TOTAL", where they z. B. in October 2015 in Essen's Grugahalle with Mia / Whippy as a singer.
