Sex & Violins is the debut album by the Swedish Country - Dance band Rednex . It was released on February 27, 1995.

backgrounds

After the band was founded, Rednex immediately achieved worldwide success with their debut single. Although the vision of creating a music group with a changing line-up from a selection of members, which was only realized in the 2010s , had existed since the beginning of the music project, at the label's request it was ultimately decided in favor of a classical permanent line-up with which too the band's first album was recorded. A team of diverse musicians was hired for the songwriting and production, who alternated or worked together on the various tracks.

In the US , Sex & Violins also appeared under the title Cotton Eye Joe (Sex & Violins) . This version contains an additional remix of the theme song from this issue. There is also a deluxe edition of the album with four bonus tracks and a PC game , released a year later .

Six singles were released from the album: Cotton Eye Joe , Old Pop in an Oak , Wish You Were Here , Wild 'n Free , Rolling Home and Riding Alone . The first three songs were great commercial successes in Europe and could reach the top of the charts in some countries; Among other things, all three were among the ten most successful songs of 1995 in Austria , which was led by Wish You Were Here and Old Pop in an Oak . Cotton Eye Joe , in particular , became an international mega-seller that was able to secure the top ranking in a large number of countries, and was the only release of the group to get a position in the US charts (at number 25). Wild 'n Free and Rolling Home were moderate successes in comparison, Riding Alone was the only single on the album that did not make it into the charts worldwide.

music

The album is characterized by a mixture of stereotypical hillbilly and country sounds and Eurodance, which was extremely popular in Europe at the time, which is characteristic of the band . Rapidly played banjos and fiddles often meet pounding bass drums that set the pace . The music and text convey a high degree of self-irony through exaggeration of Wild West clichés , the fading in of cartoon-like noises or absurdly grotesque humor . The two lead voices were sung by Mary Joe and Göran Danielsson , although the latter was never an official part of the band. He imitates an accent from the US-American southern states on several tracks in order to do justice to the image of the band.

However, in the course of the album there are often more or less strong breaks with the style. The song with the bizarrely elongated title The Sad But True Story of Ray Mingus, the Lumberjack of Bulk Rock City, and His Never Slacking Strive to Exploit the So Far Undiscovered Areas of the Intention to Bodily Intercourse from the Opposite Species of His Kind, During Intake of All the Mental Conditions That Could Be Derived from Fermentation , for example, completely dispenses with electronic dance elements and represents a pure up-tempo country number. With Wish You Were Here and Rolling Home , two seriously performed, dramatic ballads can also be heard which incorporate country elements, but are musically oriented towards international, contemporary pop productions . These are attuned by Mary Joe alone. With Nowhere in Idahoe there is a bluegrass song sung in a duet , which is loosened up by spoken passages, but comes across as relatively serious in its verses and refrains. McKenzie Brothers adopts the structure of a radio play with music, with the background sounding calmer, more atmospheric and more natural than the rest of the album.

Cover artwork

The cover of Sex & Violins shows a chamber pot standing on a wooden floor , in which a person is urinating , of whom only the shoes can be seen in the picture. The faces of the band members are digitally inserted in the urine, all of them grimacing except for Mary Joe . Above it is the name of the group in white letters, below the title of the album, much smaller.

In the Deluxe Edition, the floor and the shoes are colored blue , and both lettering are highlighted in yellow with a red border . In an additional circle in the same color, two bonus tracks of the album are advertised, the bonus game is indicated in red on the chamber pot.

The cover of Cotton Eye Joe (Sex & Violins) depicts two cacti distorted by heat shimmer in a desert landscape , while a mountain range can be seen in the background . In contrast to the international version of the album, the logo of the band known from the Cotton Eye Joe single is used on this edition . It is in the style of a wooden sign painted in red and white and is located in the upper right corner. Directly below that, across the cover, is the album title in shaded white . The title song of the edition is advertised on a red banner in the lower right corner.
