Music and lyrics

Cotton Eye Joe mixes elements of country music with the pounding beats of the then popular dance genre. Characteristic of the song is its distinctive Fidel motif, which is repeated several times in the song, once in a slight variation. The refrain is based on that of the traditional American folk song Cotton-Eyed Joe and is sung by Göran Danielsson while Mary Joe performs the verses. A sound before the second verse Banjo - Solo ; cartoon-like sound effects associated with the Wild West can be heard over and over again , such as gunshots or neighing .

In terms of content, the song revolves around the eponymous character Cotton Eye Joe, an attractive man who rides into a city that is foreign to him in order to find a little pleasure there. He begins numerous affairs with women whose hearts he breaks while the men of the city are left alone. Below is a man whose thoughts are portrayed from the first person's perspective in the chorus : if it wasn't for Cotton Eye Joe, he would have married long ago.

Music video

Like the song itself, the music video combines elements that are classically associated with a rural image and the aesthetics of the contemporary club scene . The scene is one with a lot of hay designed barn , in a wild celebration takes place, in which features of both Square Dance and Rave are to be found, and play on which Rednex the musical accompaniment. The actors, who are suitably costumed for the setting, stand out for their unclean, grubby demeanor and rowdy behavior; some rats can also be seen in the scenery . Among other things, various mostly humorous wooden signs , an electric bull and the skull of a cattle are shown again and again .
