List of the best-selling singles in Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elton John's Candle in the Wind 1997 is the best-selling single in Germany with over 4.5 million units sold.

The list of the best-selling singles in Germany is an overview of all singles that have been shown to have sold over a million times in Germany alone and thus advanced to a so-called million seller.

The most successful work is by Elton John and was published in 1997. His 1997 double A single Something About the Way You Look Tonight / Candle in the Wind , which was released as a necrology for Princess Diana after her death, sold over 4.5 million copies. According to the Guinness Book of Records , the single is the second most successful single in history, with over 33 million units sold worldwide. Only Bing Crosby's White Christmas sold more copies (50 million). The oldest work dates from 1955 and comes from the American rock 'n' roll band Bill Haley & His Comets . Their single Rock Around the Clock was one of the first singles in Germany to cross the one million mark.

Notes on interpreting the statistics listed

This list includes artists whose singles have sold over a million copies. Sales taxes for publications from 1975 onwards come largely from the BVMI ( Federal Association of the Music Industry ). The BVMI has officially been awarding gold and platinum awards for audio products since January 1, 1975. The record companies concerned must apply for the certifications; the awards are not automatically assigned. Already before 1975 record awards were made by the respective sound carrier manufacturer, but not according to standardized and officially tested criteria. According to a guideline dated January 1, 1976, the number of rated sales is determined according to the units sold to GEMA or another collecting society of the authors as domestic sales. The information for publications before 1975 comes from reputable specialist journals, specialist literature or from the artist's pages themselves.

The list takes into account all types of singles. The singles can be found in the following table in descending order of their sales and in ascending order according to the year of publication. The table contains information about the performers and titles, the authors (composers and songwriters) and music producers, the year of publication ("year of release"), any record awards received and the amount of sales. The information in the "Sales" column is a minimum number of records sold for the respective work. Since there are fixed award limits for record awards, among other things, the actual sales of the respective sound carriers can be somewhat higher - i.e. between the award-winning and the next award limit.

In addition, music streaming is also included in the sales statistics for singles , but only “premium streams” of the corresponding online music services with a certain “conversion factor” apply . Unlike music albums, singles consider premium streams regardless of the release date. The premium streams determined in this way - which are streamed over 30 seconds - were taken into account with a factor of 100: 1 up to April 5, 2018 and a factor of 200: 1 for singles since April 6, 2018.

Problem

Since the BVMI has only been awarding gold and platinum awards for a large part of the music products on the market since January 1, 1975, singles whose peak was before 1975 do not appear in this list if they are not mentioned in professional journals or specialist literature. For this reason, the successful chart singles Ganz Paris dreams of love ( Caterina Valente & Orchestra Mike Firestone ) or Cindy, Oh Cindy ( Margot Eskens ) are not included in this list, although it can be assumed that these singles, after being at the top of the German single charts for over 21 weeks or five months , more than a million copies were sold. Furthermore, only those popular audio and video carriers that have been registered with the BVMI and therefore received gold and / or platinum awards are awarded.

Limits to the award of phonograms

Since December 31, 2002, the lending limits for singles have been adjusted at irregular intervals. On January 1, 2003, the lending limits were initially reduced due to falling sales. Due to the increasing sales due to the integration of downloads and streaming, the lending limits were raised again on June 1, 2014. The awards are based on the respective release date of the sound carrier, not on the date of certification. For example, a single that was released in 1980 is now awarded a gold record for over 250,000 units sold, not 200,000.

In Germany there is a special feature that gold records are awarded again between the platinum awards. Only AMPROFON in Mexico also follows this award system. Usually there are no further awards between the individual platinum records until a diamond record is awarded. In Germany these are given out for music albums and singles, all other sound carriers are not awarded diamond records in Germany. In countries such as Poland , the diamond record represents the highest award level. In Germany this is not the case. For example, if a BVMI single receives a diamond award for one million copies sold, but later reaches the 1.2 million mark, the diamond award is replaced by a triple platinum award as the highest award.

Leaderboards

The following ranking lists provide information about the authors and performers with the most million sellers, from which nations the most performers come and which compositions most frequently exceed the one million mark.

The following peculiarities apply to the list of “million seller by country of origin”: If several performers are involved in a single, the nation of each performer counts as a whole point. If an interpreter has several nationalities or if the interpreters in a group come from several countries, the value is divided by the number of nations present. If several performers from the same nation are involved in a single, the single only counts with one point. In the list of “million seller by language”, the points are divided by the number of languages available.
