Breathless through the night is a song by German pop singer Helene Fischer . The piece is the second single from her sixth studio album Farbenspiel .

Creation and artwork

The song was written by German pop singer and composer Kristina Bach and recorded at Gaga Studios in Hamburg . The single was produced and programmed by Jean Frankfurter and published by Polydor . The song was mastered under the direction of Michael Bestmann. As an additional instrumentalist, in addition to Frankfurter on keyboard, Peter Weihe on guitar was hired. On the cover of the maxi single, next to the artist name and song title, a blurred skyline can be seen during a sunset .

The piece was written in the spring of 2013, when Bach was in Mallorca to work on her new album. Because she still wanted to meet friends, she recorded the chorus of the piece on tape in her kitchen within two minutes. The title was actually intended for Bach himself, but at an event Fischer asked Bach whether she had a new piece for her. At first she said no, but later she passed the song on to Fischer. In 2014 Bach published her composition as an English version with the title Take a Breath on her studio album Leben ist Liebe!

Publication and promotion

The first release of Breathless through the night took place on 29 November 2013, Germany, Austria and Switzerland . The song is available as a single download and as a maxi single with six further remixes for download or as a physical sound carrier. On iTunes there is a special maxi version Breathless Through the Night (The Radio Mixes Special Version) with a total of eight tracks. In addition to the album version of Atemlos durch die Nacht , the maxi single contains remix versions by Bassflow, Sean Finn and Florian Paetzold as B-side . In addition to the regular maxi single, a remix EP with seven " extended remixes" was released.

In order to promote the song, there followed, among other things, live appearances in prime time during the Bambi 2013 awards ceremony , Menschen 2013 and TV total . On November 13, 2014, Fischer was awarded her second Bambi in the entertainment category. Prior to the frontman sang Sunrise Avenue , Samu Haber , a short unplugged version of Breathless through the night at the start of his eulogy; after the award ceremony, Fischer performed live. In the run-up to the 2014 World Cup , the song became one of the favorites of the German national soccer team . So it happened that the piece was played in the stadium after the test matches in the run-up to the World Cup. On July 15, 2014, Fischer sang the piece live at the reception of the national team on the fan mile in front of the Brandenburg Gate . DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach stated that he did not know who made it that breathless became one of the team songs through the night . He said, however, that the Borussia Dortmund players are big fans of her and that she sang for the team last year after the 2013 UEFA Champions League final . Before Fischer's appearance, Weidenfeller was specifically asked about her by Borussia Dortmund, who once again confirmed that he was a big fan of her.

Content and plagiarism allegation

The lyrics to breathless through the night are written in German. Music and text are by Kristina Bach. Musically, the song moves in the area of the hit , the rhythm of the piece is based on the Discofox . In addition to Fischer's singing, the voices of Bimey Oberreit, Franco Leon , Julian Feifel and Kareena Schönberger can be heard in the background . The song depicts a perfect night between a couple in love, a night without taboos and full of freedom that should never end. In the ultimate chart show on January 6, 2016, Bach replied to Atze Schröder's question what it was actually about with the short answer: "Joy of life".

Shortly after its publication, the media and music experts discussed a similarity to the song Land of Dreams by Rosanne Cash . Cash composed the piece in April 2012 for the Discover America campaign promoting travel to the United States . The production team explained the similarities in such a way that both songs are based on an Irish folk song. In January 2015, the German music producer Jack White claimed that the first eight notes of Atemlos durch die Nacht were identical to those of his composition Ein Festival der Liebe . The marks nine to twelve are therefore a repetition of the first four; then comes a repetition of the twelve notes. The following “oho oho” is also similar to the “oho oha” from A Festival of Love .

Breathless through the night
until a new day awakens.
Breathless just out,
your eyes pull me out!

Breathless through the night,
feel what love is doing to us.
Breathless, no fear of heights,
great cinema for the two of us.

Refrain, original excerpt

During the appearance for the German national team, Fischer sang a slightly modified version. The line “Everything I want is there, pure freedom, very close” became “Our dream is true, we have the World Cup!” And “Feel what love does to us” became “ Feel what football does to us ”.

Music video

At the beginning of the music video, the skyline and other streets of Chicago can be seen at dusk . Fischer then prepares for the evening. Then she drives to the first party location in a BMW M6 Cabriolet . There she sings her song with the guests. Later she leaves the party with two friends and drives in a traditional London black cab taxi to the next location in a bar . After a short time, she also leaves this place and goes to a discotheque . In between there are always pictures of Chicago at night and fishermen singing the song in different places. She is dressed differently at each location, so that she presents a total of six outfits. The total length is 3:37 minutes. Directed by Oliver Sommer. At Musicload , the video made it to number one on the music video charts.
