The fan mile , fan festival or fan zone are areas in public places that allow sports to be broadcast on a large screen for a large crowd. The term was coined for the 2006 soccer World Cup in Germany , when “ FIFA Fan Festivals” and “FIFA Fan Festivals” were set up at all venues for the first time . Originally, they were intended as alternative locations for football enthusiasts ( fans ) who had not received tickets for the games. But this form of joint football watching quickly developed its own attractiveness - under the name of “ Public Viewing".

FIFA fan miles were located at all of the venues, such as Berlin , Hamburg , Hanover , Nuremberg , Munich , Frankfurt am Main , Stuttgart , Gelsenkirchen ( Glückaufkampfbahn ), Dortmund , Leipzig , Kaiserslautern or Cologne and, under different sponsorship, in all larger cities. With an official capacity of 900,000 people, after an initial 300,000, which underlines the increased interest in fan miles during the course of the tournament, the Berlin Fan Mile was the largest of all fan miles.

For the following European Football Championship in 2008 in Austria and Switzerland , official fan miles were also set up by FIFA and UEFA at the venues , as well as at the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa , the 2012 European Football Championship in Poland and Ukraine and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . Again and again a fan mile was built on the Berlin fan mile in Germany. Corresponding facilities were also set up both at the venues and in Berlin for the 2016 European Football Championship in France .

The Society for German Language paid tribute to the formative character of the World Cup on the mood in Germany by choosing “Fanmeile” as the word of the year 2006: This was used to describe places that hundreds of thousands of fans from all over the world came to during the World Cup in Germany to express their very special attitude towards life.
