The installation light limit

Light limit is the name of a temporary installation by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH on the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall , based on an idea by the brothers Christopher Bauder and Marc Bauder . The term “light limit” was chosen as word of the year 2014 .

The installation

From November 7th to 9th, 2014, 6,880 white balloons on 2.50 meter high carbon poles marked part of the former course of the wall. The white balloons made of natural rubber were each 60 centimeters in diameter. The base of each object was a plastic base filled with 20 liters of water. In total, each balloon stele was 3.40 meters high. The installation was 15.3 kilometers long and stretched across Berlin from Bornholmer Strasse to Oberbaumbrücke . The film collage pieces of the Wall with historical film recordings were shown on a monitor each at seven locations .

procedure

One after the other, the balloons were released into the air on November 9, 2014 by a “balloon sponsor” each.

The balloon steles had been in place since November 7th. The opening ceremony was carried out by the then Governing Mayor Klaus Wowereit on the Marschall Bridge . In the evening the balloons were illuminated from the base. As a final act, the balloons were released one after the other by a “balloon sponsor” on November 9, 2014 from 7:20 pm. A round note with a personal story of the godfather's wall was attached to each balloon .

implementation

The balloon steles were designed and produced by a Berlin design studio in 18 months. Over 40 individual parts were mostly developed specifically for this installation. The steles were installed in the DRK workshops for the disabled in Potsdam . The light border was realized by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH in cooperation with the Robert Havemann Society .

Balloon finds

After the event, over 90 finds of attached cards were registered on the website of the organizer ( Kulturprojekte Berlin ) (as of March 9, 2018). Most along a north-northeast line from Berlin. Deviating from this, there were two reports of finds near Bremen , one near Soest , one south of Münster and one south of Frankfurt am Main .

Word of the year

The German Language Society announced on December 12, 2014 light limit as word of the year known: that it reflected in a special way the great emotions reflected that the end of the GDR causes in autumn 1989 and 25 years later still in Germany.
