Stress test
Stress test (from English stress testing ) refers to a test in which reactions to stress such as increased stress and strain of a physical or psychological nature are measured. Due to its spread from medicine to other fields such as engineering, economics and politics up to everyday language, the term was chosen by the Society for German Language (GfdS) as word of the year 2011 in Germany.

The term originally referred to in human medicine stress tests as in ergometry . According to Doris Steffens from the Institute for German Language , it was established in the technical language in the 1990s and has become part of everyday language since the arbitration for the controversial Stuttgart 21 rail project in 2011 . According to Armin Burkhardt , the word "linguistically extremely productive " as it is used in new areas. The head of the Duden editorial team, Werner Scholze-Stubenrecht , said: "It has become a common word that is now also used for relationship crises and footballers". In 2011, Duden announced that the word had been included in the new edition of the German Universal Dictionary and in the online edition.

Word of the year 2011
On December 16, 2011, the Society for German Language Stress Test voted the word of the year and justified the decision as follows:
“This word, originally from human medicine, came across noticeably often over the course of the year. From a linguistic point of view, it proved to be extremely productive and could be found in a wide variety of areas: Not only banks were tested for their resilience, but also the Stuttgart 21 station project, the green-red state government in Baden-Württemberg and German nuclear power plants were subjected to stress tests. This practice and thus the word thus acquired political, economic and societal relevance. The stress test has now become an integral part of everyday language. "
