Chancellor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Chancellor one is head of government of Germany or Austria , and a director of the Swiss Federal Chancellery called.

Especially after Angela Merkel's first election as German Chancellor, there were discussions in Germany about the correctness of the expression “Chancellor” and the address as Chancellor , who was included in the Duden in 2004. In 2005 the term “Federal Chancellor” was chosen as word of the year in Germany .

The German Language Society justified this as follows:

“The feminine ending -in for professional and personal designations is not new - nevertheless, just a few decades ago, a woman at the head of the government would have been called Federal Chancellor . At the latest since the beginning of the election campaign for the early elections to the German Bundestag, the designation of Chancellor Angela Merkel was established. Linguistically, the expression raises interesting questions, such as the lexicalized composition such as the Federal Chancellery or the protocol-based custom of addressing . "

The communication scientist Lars M. Heitmüller had already registered the Internet addresses “bundeskanzlerin.de” and “ bundespraesidentin .de” in 1998, since the Federal Chancellery and the Federal President's Office were not interested in handing them over to the respective incumbent after the election.

In Switzerland , Annemarie Huber-Hotz was the first female Federal Chancellor from 2000 to 2007 ; Corina Casanova held this office from 2008 to 2015 .

In Austria, Brigitte Bierlein was given the mandate in 2019 to become the first woman at the head of the government to temporarily hold office as Federal Chancellor until a new government was sworn in after the 2019 National Council election. She was in office until January 7, 2020, during which time she was named Chancellor .
