The cultural Berlin GmbH is a state-owned company to promote, networking and exchange of culture and history. Moritz van Dülmen has been the managing director since then . The responsible Berlin Senator for Culture and Europe, currently Klaus Lederer, chairs the Supervisory Board . The registered office of the GmbH is the Palais Podewils in the historic monastery quarter in the Berlin district of Mitte .

Statutory purpose and projects

As a partner of the State of Berlin, the company designs and organizes various large-scale cultural projects. The purpose of the Articles of Association of Art and Culture is realized through the development, production and implementation of cultural events, in particular major events such as exhibitions, festivals, anniversaries, themed years and cultural events within the framework of cultural exchange and town twinning on behalf of the State of Berlin. These include the Long Night of Museums , Berlin Art Week , the European Month of Photography , the theme year Destroyed Diversity and the anniversaries on the 20th and 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with the domino action and the light border . On behalf of the Berlin Senate Chancellery , Kulturprojekte Berlin organized the Citizens' Festival on the Day of German Unity 2018, conceived the “Bauhaus Week Berlin 2019” as part of the 100th Bauhaus anniversary celebrated across Germany and coordinated the Berlin exhibition for the Berlin City Museum with the Foundation Humboldt Forum . In 2019, Kulturprojekte Berlin organized a festival week on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the peaceful revolution , which "showed a new desire to tell stories and to exchange ideas" and also met with broad international interest. To commemorate the end of the Second World War , Kulturprojekte Berlin implemented a digital themed week around May 8, 2020.

In addition, the company is active in the areas of cultural education as well as in networking and advising cultural workers and creative people. These include the coalition of the independent scene , the network of independent Berlin project spaces and initiatives and others. Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH is responsible for venues (Schaubude, Palais Podewils ) and festivals ( transmediale ) and also offers services for museums (Museumsdienst Berlin, MuseumJournal , Museumportal) and other cultural institutions (e.g. the online portal Berlin Bühnen).

reception

In 2008, the Professional Association of Visual Artists Berlin criticized the fact that the state of Berlin was giving itself donations by founding a state-owned GmbH. The management and control are thus directly incumbent on the employees of the administration, who are bound by instructions, and the use of the funds eludes any parliamentary and thus public control. The accusation was that in this case the state was not promoting culture, but rather creating it itself. With Kulturprojekte GmbH, a decade-long consensus on democratic cultural policy is increasingly dissolving, which consists in the state promoting art while respecting its autonomy . Managing director van Dülmen, on the other hand, speaks of “new, ideally also funny ideas for participation” that excited and interested a broad public and reached a large target group.

In addition, Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH managed the conception and implementation of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the peaceful revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall from November 4th to 10th, 2019. The entire festival week included more than 200 events such as readings, discussions, concerts and art events. The cost of the anniversary event was around ten million euros. During the closing event, there was a scandal when a Hebrew lettering "Enough with the occupation" could be seen during a live broadcast on ZDF . It was shown during the performance of the singer Anna Loos along with other sequences of various protest movements. The Israeli ambassador Jeremy Issacharoff criticized it as a "shame" that some people considered it appropriate to use this event for political purposes against Israel. Managing director Moritz van Dülmen said about the incident: “That was negligent sloppiness for which I can only apologize. We should have checked that. "
