The Museum Journal ( spelling : MuseumsJournal ) is a German trade journal for the museums , castles and memorials of Berlin and Potsdam . It is published by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH and appears quarterly, at the beginning of each quarter.

history

The first edition of the Museum Journal appeared in August 1987, the editor-in-chief was Gerhard Riecke, publisher of the Museum Pedagogical Service Berlin. The spelling "Museums-Journal" was used in the running text, and "MuseumsJournal" has been established since issue 2/2010. The magazine initially reported, according to its title addition, “From the work of the museums, castles and archives of the State of Berlin and the private collections and museums”, but explicitly not about the State Museums of Berlin owned by the Prussian Cultural Heritage , as they are part of the publication series “Berliner Museums. Reports from the Staatliche Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz ”have been publishing their own magazine since 1919. That changed when, in January 1989, the magazine “Berliner Museen” was included in the MuseumsJournal. The title addition reads “Reports from the museums, castles and collections in the State of Berlin - at the same time, Berlin museums' 5th episode”. The division into two separate reports due to different museum sponsorships was thus canceled. With the inclusion of the German Historical Museum, which, like the National Museums in Berlin, is under federal sponsorship, the MuseumsJournal has now published on the entire museum landscape in West Berlin . A second expansion took place in 1990, when the museums of East Berlin were also included in the MuseumsJournal. The count in the title addition of the MuseumsJournal changed to "Berlin museums' 6th episode".

In 2006 the Museum Education Service merged with the Berliner Kulturveranstaltungs-GmbH to form Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH , accordingly the MuseumsJournal has been published by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH since issue 3/2006.

Content orientation

The MuseumsJournal usually provides advance information about the special exhibitions starting in the respective quarter in Berlin and Potsdam. It presents museum-political developments, presents holdings and new acquisitions, shares research results and discoveries, reports from everyday museum life. The authors of the texts are generally the directors, curators and museum staff. Since issue 3/2009, an art or cultural history theme has been highlighted from different perspectives in each issue. With the 1/2017 issue, the MuseumsJournal began a series on the Humboldt Forum in which interviews and articles appear. The MuseumJournal also contains a calendar of the special exhibitions with addresses, opening times and guided tours.

Special editions

In the course of its existence, the MuseumsJournal published five special editions. In March 1990 “Museums of the GDR in Berlin and Potsdam” appeared. In 1992, the MuseumsJournal published “Musées de Berlin”, a booklet format, a museum guide in French that contained an alphabetical list of museums and longer texts on museum complexes. In 1996 the special edition “Stadtmuseum Berlin” gave insights into the collections of the newly founded State Museum . The booklet “Picasso und seine Zeit”, published in July 1997 as a special edition, summarized the contributions from the out of print edition 3/1996 and edition 4/1996 to the Berggruen Collection .

MuseumsJournal online

Between 2000 and 2008, the MuseumsJournal published exhibition reviews and other museum-related texts written by the editorial team on its website under the title “MuseumsJournal online”. With the launch of the Museum Portal Berlin in January 2008, which is also operated under the editorial responsibility of Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH, a different medium was available for this reporting; from now on, the online offer of the MuseumJournal was limited to reading samples from the print edition.
