The Berlin Senate Chancellery (SenK) is the administrative staff of the Governing Mayor of Berlin . State Secretary Christian Gaebler has been Head of the Senate Chancellery since April 17, 2018 .
The task is to support the planning and control of the state politics of Berlin . These include the political coordination of the Senate labor, working with the federal government and the other provinces, the press and information work that Internet presentation of Berlin, media policy, maintaining relations with Europe, cooperation with the neighboring Polish provinces in Framework of the Oder partnership and the representation of Berlin to the outside world, including relations with partner cities around the world. Since December 2016, science and university policy has also been the responsibility of the Senate Chancellery.
The seat of the Senate Chancellery is the Berlin City Hall, the so-called Red City Hall , until the reunification of Germany and Berlin it was the Schöneberg City Hall .

The then Lord Mayor Ernst Reuter decided in January 1949 to set up a “city chancellery”, which was initially set up in Charlottenburger Fasanenstrasse 7–8 and only a few months later moved to the Schöneberg Town Hall . The previous deputy mayor of Schöneberg, Georg von Broich-Oppert , became the first head of the city chancellery .
With the new constitution of (West) Berlin , the authority was renamed "Senate Chancellery" on February 1, 1951.
The head of the Senate Chancellery assumes the position of the highest state secretary of Berlin.
Tasks and organization
4 State Secretaries are affiliated to the Berlin Senate Chancellery . These are the plenipotentiary of the State of Berlin at the federal level and State Secretary for Civic Engagement, the State Secretary for Administrative and Infrastructure Modernization / Growing City and the State Secretary for Science and Research . Departments and units work to help you.
Department 1: Federal Affairs and Civic Engagement
The department consists of 4 units:
- Federal affairs
- Office of the Prime Minister's Conference (MPK)
- Media and radio affairs , network policy
- Civic engagement and promotion of democracy
Department 2: Senate Spokeswoman, Press and Information
The Senate spokesperson coordinates answering media inquiries.

Department 4: Chief of Protocol of the State of Berlin
The chief of protocol of the state of Berlin is responsible for the implementation of events with high-ranking guests. 2 departments work for him:
- Protocol , support of official guests, events, orders and honors, honorary graves
- International (excluding EU matters), international city connections, foreign representations in Berlin, armed forces matters
Department ZS
This department is the internal control center - government work is planned and the Senate Personnel Commission is located in this unit.

Department 5: Science
