The Berlin Senate Department for Home Affairs and Sport is one of ten specialist administrations of the Berlin Senate with the rank of a state ministry and as such part of the state government as well as the highest state authority responsible for domestic and sports policy in the German capital.

The current Interior Senator has been Andreas Geisel ( SPD ) since December 2016 . He is supported by three state secretaries : Torsten Akmann for the internal affairs area, Aleksander Dzembritzki for the sports area and Sabine Smentek for the information and communication technology area.

The Senate Department for the Interior is the central Berlin state authority for all matters relating to public safety and order and is therefore particularly responsible for the Berlin police . Other important tasks include: a. to name the following areas of responsibility:

The Senate Department for Internal Affairs and Sport is divided into five main departments and a so-called cross-sectional department for the central service:

  • Department I - Constitutional and Administrative Law
  • Department II - Protection of the Constitution
  • Department III - Public Safety and Order (including supervision of the law enforcement service)
  • Division IV - Sport
  • Department V - ICT control, digitization of administration and citizen services
  • Department ZS - department-wide and in-house cross-sectional tasks, recruitment and training authorities, supervisory authorities, public order offices
