Kurt "Kutte" Neubauer (born September 30, 1922 in Berlin ; † December 9, 2012 there ) was a German politician ( SPD ). He was a member of the German Bundestag and mayor and interior senator of Berlin.

Life

Neubauer completed an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic , served in labor and in the armed forces . After being a prisoner of war , he joined the SPD. He became district chairman of Berlin-Friedrichshain and in 1950 a member of the SPD state executive. He organized Willy Brandt's rise to the position of head of the SPD in Berlin and became a key figure in Berlin's social democrats. In 1962 he became deputy chairman of the SPD in Berlin.

From February 1, 1952 to April 16, 1963, he was a member of the German Bundestag as the Berlin representative elected by the House of Representatives . Until the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, Neubauer lived in the eastern part of Berlin . Along with Margarete Heise, he was one of the members of the Bundestag who had a residence in the city's Soviet sector. On the day the Wall was built, Neubauer was in Nuremberg , his family in West Berlin . The entire family was then refused entry into the GDR and East Berlin until the early 1970s.

He resigned the Bundestag mandate to become Senator for Youth and Sport in Berlin on March 11, 1963 . In October 1967 he changed from the office of youth to that of the interior senator and at the same time became mayor. As a Senator for the Interior, he was responsible, among other things, for the use of the controversial undercover agent Peter Urbach in the Berlin student scene. The murder of the undercover agent Ulrich Schmücker , which was never resolved, also occurred during his service. In 1975 he handed over the mayor's office to Hermann Oxfort ( FDP ), but remained Senator for the Interior until 1977. Because he was late paying a fee to the Berlin state treasury, he came under increasing political pressure and resigned.

On November 3, 1993, the Berlin Senate awarded Neubauer the honorary title of City Elder . In addition, he was honored with the Ernst Reuter plaque and the Great Federal Cross of Merit.

At the time of his first election to the Bonn parliament (1952), Neubauer was its youngest member. Until he died in 2012, he was the last living member of the first German Bundestag.
