Waldemar Schmidt (born February 7, 1909 in Berlin ; † February 21, 1975 there ) was a politician ( KPD / SED ) and former police president of Berlin (East) .

Life

Schmidt, who came from a working-class family, worked as a machine fitter after attending primary school and training as a locksmith (1923 to 1927). In 1928 he became a member of the KPD and attended the Lenin School in Moscow from 1932 to 1934 . After his return he took part in the anti-fascist resistance and was incarcerated in Brandenburg prison from 1935 to 1945 .

After the liberation he was secretary of the Berlin district leadership of the KPD from 1945 to 1946 and a member of the party executive of the SED from 1946 to 1947. From 1946 to 1948 he was a City Councilor for Labor and from 1948 to 1950 as City Councilor for Personnel and Administration in Berlin. Schmidt was elected to the city ​​council of Greater Berlin in 1946, to which he belonged until 1967. From 1950 to August 1953 he was President of the People's Police of East Berlin with the rank of Chief Inspector (successor to Paul Markgraf ). From August 1953 to 1963 he was Permanent Deputy Mayor of East Berlin (successor to Alfred Neumann ) 1963 to 1965 Head of the Office of the Ministers of the GDR and from 1965 until his death in 1975. Secretary for International Labor the Committee of Antifascist Resistance Fighters of GDR. Schmidt was also a Berlin representative in the People's Chamber from 1963 to 1971 and belonged to the SED parliamentary group. He was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit (VVO) in silver (May 6, 1955) and gold (1965), the VVO in gold (1969) and the Karl Marx Order (1974).

In 1986 a street in Berlin-Hellersdorf was named after him (since 1992 Erich-Kästner-Straße).
