Entrepreneur

Elmar Pieroth began his entrepreneurial career at the age of 19. Instead of joining his parents' winery, he developed a new direct sales system and led the Pieroth company ( renamed WIV Wein International after the glycol wine scandal ) to international success. As early as the 1960s, he gave employees a share of the company's capital, which became known as the " Pieroth model ". In order to stimulate other companies, Pieroth presented an annual “Prize for the Promotion of Wealth Creation in Large Groups”. In addition to the usual economic balances, he introduced social balances in the company in order to calculate parts of the social value creation in the company. Under the heading of “humanizing work”, he introduced, among other things, a smooth transition into retirement and encouraged bringing children into the company. In 1969 he left the management of his own company to devote himself exclusively to politics.

Party politician

Pieroth became a member of the CDU in 1965, had been a board member of the SME Association from 1965 and its federal chairman from 1987 to 1993. From 1973 to 1981 he was CDU district chairman in Bad Kreuznach. In 1976 he became chairman of the Federal Economic Policy Committee.

From 1981 to 1993 he was a member of the federal executive committee of the CDU, from 1987 to 1993 federal chairman of the middle class association of the CDU / CSU.

Pieroth caused a sensation in the party with his campaign style. In 1969 in Rhineland-Palatinate he established canvassing , the personal visit by candidates to voters at home. In his later election campaigns after the turnaround in East Berlin , he invented the "living room conversations" and joined together with the PDS contestant Petra Pau on.

Member of the Bundestag

From 1969 to 1981 he was a member of the German Bundestag , from 1972 to 1981 a member of the board of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group . In 1980 he became a member of the parliamentary economic committee and spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group for economic cooperation and development aid.

Berlin Senator

From 1981 to 1996 Pieroth was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives . In the Richard von Weizsäcker and Eberhard Diepgen I Senates he was Senator for Economics and Transport from 1981 to 1985, and then Senator for Economics and Labor in the Diepgen II Senate from 1985 to 1989. One of the most important projects of his tenure was the establishment of technology and start-up centers.

In June 1990 he moved to East Berlin as a city councilor for economics , to the Tino Schwierzina magistrate . In the same year he became chairman of the council of experts for the introduction of the social market economy in the GDR at the GDR Prime Minister .

From 1991 to 1996 he was Senator for Finance in the state government of Eberhard Diepgens and from March 1991 to December 1994 at the same time a member of the administrative board of the Treuhandanstalt . From 1996 to 1998 he was again Berlin Senator for Economy and Businesses. In 1998 he resigned.

Pieroth was ex officio chairman of the supervisory board of Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), Berliner Stadtreinigungsbetriebe (BSR), Berliner Wasserbetriebe (BWB), Wirtschaftsförderung Berlin GmbH (WFB) and Berliner Hafen- und Lagerhausbetriebe (BEHALA).

Glycol wine scandal

During Pieroth's tenure as Berlin Senator for Economic Affairs, the wine trading company he founded was involved in the glycol-wine scandal . At that time, traces of the health- endangering chemical diethylene glycol were discovered in wines from the company's range , the addition of which was supposed to make the wine more sweet. Pieroth was not active in the company at the time of the scandal and testified that he had no knowledge of the machinations. Former managers of his company contradicted him, but long-term investigations revealed no evidence of Pieroth's involvement.

Later the accusation arose that Elmar Pieroth should not have written his diploma thesis, which he published in 1968 at the University of Mainz in the subject of economics. Pieroth said he worked in a team of friends and also “delegated” some things. The evening newspaper from Munich then commented on its article on the topic with the words "Did Pieroth adulterate with the diploma?"

Resignation in 1998

In 1998 he resigned as Senator for Economics, according to his own account because of official fatigue. Press releases linked it to an investigation into his wine company for tax evasion. There was no judicial clarification.

Civic engagement

In 1961, Pieroth and employees of his company started an aid project for farmers in Togo, West Africa . In 1971 he initiated the granting of micro-credits to 34,000 farmers and craftsmen in Burkina Faso to date.

Since 2001 Elmar Pieroth has been honorary chairman of the association “Most - Bridge from Berlin to Central and Eastern Europe”. V. "
