The Pieroth wine AG (formerly WIV Wein International AG ) is an international wine trading company based in Castle Layen , a district of Rümmelsheim . Core business is the sale of wines , sects and spirits directly to consumers.

In 1953 the brothers Kuno and Elmar Pieroth developed a new way of marketing wine. Due to the limited mobility of customers at the time, the brothers began to deliver the wine from their winery directly to the customer. The Pieroth winery was the first winery in Germany to sell its wines through direct sales.

In 1985 the company was embroiled in the glycol wine scandal . In one of the company's bottling plants, German wines were blended with Austrian wine adulterated with glycol. As a result of the glycol wine scandal, the structures and branches of the company, which it had always kept secret, became apparent. The company was almost insolvent due to the great loss of trust. The owners then changed the company name to WIV Wein International . In 2018 the company returned to its old company name and operates under Pieroth again.

Pieroth Wein AG and its subsidiaries sell their wines directly through around 350 agents (known as wine consultants) and through an online shop. Pieroth sold the stores operating as Pieroth Retail (formerly Vino ) in 2019 to Schloss Wachenheim AG, which belongs to the Reh Group . Pieroth is the fourth largest wine retail chain in Germany.

The company is owned by the founding Pieroth family, who are represented by Johannes Pieroth and Andreas Pieroth on the family council and supervisory board.
