Heinz Striek (born July 27, 1918 in Berlin ; † October 29, 2011 there ) was a German financial politician and sports official .

Life

Striek learned the profession of banker at Dresdner Bank in Berlin. Member of the SPD since 1946 , he was first elected to the Berlin House of Representatives in 1954. In 1962 he became State Secretary and in early 1967 Senator for Finance. The governing mayor Heinrich Albertz also appointed him mayor and thus his deputy. Albertz's successor Klaus Schütz left Striek as Finance Senator in October 1967, but released him from his position as mayor. The affair surrounding the bankrupt Steglitzer Kreisel , for which the Senate guaranteed 40 million marks, cost Striek the office in 1975. He resigned because the public prosecutor's office was investigating him on suspicion of undocumented false testimony before the Kreisel Investigation Committee. He was acquitted in court.

From 1976 to 1989 Striek worked for the German-Israeli Society as Vice President and as Berlin State Chairman. In 1985 he received the honorary title " City Elder of Berlin ".

For many years Striek was treasurer and vice-president of the Hertha BSC sports club . Until his death in late October 2011, he was chairman of the association's council of elders.

Striek was buried in the forest cemetery in Zehlendorf , as was his wife Ilse Striek, who died on May 12, 2015.
