Hans-Günter Hoppe (born November 9, 1922 in Stettin ; † March 22, 2000 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( FDP ). From 1963 to 1971 he was finance and justice senator in Berlin and from 1975 to 1987 deputy chairman of the FDP parliamentary group in the German Bundestag .

Life and work

He was born the son of the civil servant Artur Hoppe and his wife Gertrud. He was a soldier in the Wehrmacht from 1941 and was taken prisoner by the Americans .

After returning to Germany , he studied law and political science at the University of Rostock from 1947 , where he was elected to the student council in 1947. In 1949 he moved to the Free University of Berlin (FU). After the first state examination in law, he worked at the university administration and became director of the FU.

Political party

In 1946 he became a member of the Liberal Democratic Party of Germany (LDP) and university advisor for the Mecklenburg State Association . In 1949 he was supposed to be arrested for “inciting” students against the SED regime and fled to the western part of Berlin .

There he became a member of the FDP. From 1961 to 1971 he was deputy state chairman of the Berlin FDP and a member of the FDP federal executive committee. From 1977 to 1987 he was a representative of the FDP parliamentary group in the presidium of the FDP.

MP and Senator

He was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives from 1952 to 1959 and from 1963 to 1973. From 1955 to 1959 and from 1971 to 1973 he was also Vice-President of the House of Representatives.

In two SPD / FDP coalitions, Hoppe was finance senator from 1963 to 1967 and from 1967 to 1971 justice senator of Berlin.

In 1972 Hoppe switched to federal politics and was a member of the German Bundestag as a Berlin member until 1990 . He was a member of the budget committee and the committee for intra-German relations. From 1975 to 1987 he was deputy chairman of the FDP parliamentary group. He supported the détente policy of the SPD / FDP coalition and warned of the growth tendencies of public budgets.

Hoppe was a member of the board of directors of the Deutsche Siedlungs- und Landesrentenbank Bonn and the board of trustees of the German Foundation for International Development (DSE). Until 1998 he was Deputy DSE President.

He is buried in the Dahlem forest cemetery. (Field 006-546) His grave is dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honorary grave .

Awards

In 1990 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1993 the state of Berlin awarded him the title of city ​​elder .

Private

Hoppe was married to the pharmacist Annemarie Müller (1920–2017). After his death, his wife founded the Annemarie and Hans-Günter Hoppe Foundation at the University of Rostock to promote study, teaching and research.
